About
It took Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, one of the most original women on the French Riviera, seven years to build one of the most beautiful sites on the Côte d’Azur. An enlightened art enthusiast who travelled back and forth across France and Europe, Béatrice de Rothschild built up an incomparable and eclectic collection of masterpieces: priceless Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, works by Fragonard, paintings by the masters (Boucher, Carpaccio, Tiepolo, etc.), Louis XVI furniture, and so on.

- Diana RBirch Run, Michigan2,083 contributionsA Riviera Must SeeThis is a beautiful home with even more beautiful gardens. The bus schedule was messed up the day we went so we had to walk from Villefranche sur Mer (1.4 miles mostly an uphill climb). I thought I might have a heat stroke but thankfully we made it ok. Toured the home first then the gardens. We absolutely loved the gardens. It was one of our highlights of our Riviera trip. The fountains musical show, the stepping stones across, the many sculptures and all the gorgeous flowers all add to the experience. I highly recommend! (We got a cab to go to our next destination LOL)Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 July 2023
- celinabeesPortsmouth, United Kingdom130 contributionsAmazing but *WATCH OUT* for BUS POLICE TRAP IF GOING BY BUS!Great time with a 9 year old. Highly recommend listening to the audio as you can choose what you like in each room to listen about. Very interesting and educational about the family history. HOWEVER after reading how to get there we got the no.15 bus from behind the large Monoprix store only to see that the driver said we needed pre paid tickets and could not pay him cash. He let us and others on (and he didn’t speak English) but gave us a leaflet on how to get the tickets whist on route (or so we thought). So we desperately attempted to purchase them via the instructions and app but to no avail. 2 stops later 5 plus traffic /bus wardens piled on the bus asking to see everyone’s tickets. They then demanded we handed over to them our precious passports/ID cards from those of us with no tickets and took us off the bus. We were expecting them to simply tell us off but what came next was RIDICULOUS! They immediately started telling us we all were being fined on the spot! Fines varying from 40-60 euros per passenger including my child!! We were outraged at what was a genuine mistake on our part and explained that the driver let us on, and we wouldn’t have got on If we knew we couldn’t pay. This went on for 20 mins back and forth with the mean supervisor who wasn’t having any of it. Some people instantly paid - others of us fought our cause and finally got somewhere without no fine. We had to then walk to the nearest tram station and buy tickets before returning to the bus stop. But when we arrived back the same cycle of disruption was happening on the next bus! We watched more tourists being removed by the same men again and some not brave enough to stand up to them. It was bullish tactics by them. So many buses around the world take payment on the bus. What’s happened is that from July 1st here you now need prepaid card but as a tourist how would you know this. There was just no fairness to this and isn’t great for tourism. Seemed they targeted this bus service knowing that many tourists visit this house and they can make money easy from fining them. So be aware!!Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2023
- RIchard035Northwood, United Kingdom1,318 contributionsAttractive house and gardensInteresting house and very attractive gardens with excellent views. Parking on site can get very busy. There is a bus stop on the road alongside the villa. We were there in August 2022 when it was very hot and there was little relief from the heat as there is no air conditioning in the house.Visited September 2022Travelled with familyWritten 14 August 2023
- chmidoRichmond, Virginia180 contributionsWorth the time.We were a little torn based on the reviews, but we are very glad we went. We took the bus which was easy and could pay cash for our tickets with the driver. The free audio guide was interesting and you could listen to as much or as little of it as you liked. The gardens are absolutely stunning! We didn’t even realize from the villa that the gardens are way more than what you see out of the window and they wind around both edges of the property with stunning views on both sides of the water.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 September 2023
- Azsunshine193010 contributionsOutstanding and tickets available at the VillaNo need to pay ahead. We went a few days ago in October 2023 and I am reading about tourists who are getting scammed by local bus drivers who demand credit cards and passports, then fine tourists when the credit cards don’t work. There is ticket office inside the door of the villa. We had a car so I can’t offer tips on public transportation. Parking in October mid-day was easy but there is limited parking on site so I’m not sure how parking is handled during the high tourist season of summer. This is an outstanding site to visit. Get the audio guide as you learn so much that otherwise you would not know. First, the setting overlooking the Mediterranean is stunning, it will take your breath away. The house is beautiful and elaborate with Louis the XVI furnishings, an extensive collection of Sevre and Meissen porcelains, but the extensive gardens were my favorite. This is a step back into the time of the Belle Epoque. The young woman, Beatrice, inherited her father’s Rothschild fortune, was unhappily married, could not have children after her much older husband gave her an infection, so she put her time and money into building this place, gambling at the casinos, and doting on her animals. We had lunch at the cafe and were amazed at the quality of the food. The two items on the menu that stood out at some of the best food we had in France was the risotto carbonara and the lemon tartlette. The salad was also very good and beautifully presented. The setting of the cafe is on the patio of the villa overlooking the sea.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2023

I visited this extraordinary place on May and I was delighted this garden and views from various perspectives to the sea. I am sure that I will came back there to see it again, because that nature, views and sophisticated layout of this garden are really unique. To me one of the most beautiful place on our planet. - Indiana1000Victoria, Canada48 contributionsReally worth the visitWe arrived just as the gates opened, which seemed perfect timing. We had the gardens to ourselves. This is a gorgeous place, with spectacular views of Cap Ferrat from inside the villa and from the gardens. The house is just as interesting as the many, many gardens. The exterior of the house as you enter is under some restoration, but it doesn't mar the experience. The fountains are beautiful, but they've piped in some completely unnecessary music, which makes it a little Veags for my preference. We had coffee and cake on the terrace, which was lovely. There is also a beautiful diningroom. You can buy your tickets online beforehand, or at the ticket office onsite. We took an Uber there and back, since we didn't have a car. I was a little nervous about getting an Uber to get us all the way up in the hills, but it arrived within 4 minutes of calling, so zero problems. The villa was one of the best places we saw in Nice.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023

The villa is just like home, if you have a spectacular fortune and exquisite taste. The audioguide is very informative if a little coy about the 'infection ' Ephrussi gave his wife. The Baroness threw a wedding for her dog, reported in the Boston Times. Over a hundred dogs attended. Just like home, if you are unfathomably wealthy. It is a beautiful place . Been at the villa a few times over the years. Same beautiful location and work to preserve what has been done there. The rooms are chic and elegant, the gardens beautiful, the fountains and the music were there making a complex of calm and fortunate.

This was a great experience all round. The gardens were stunning and the people working there were super helpful. We had lunch in the restaurant. It was delicious and very reasonably priced. If you visit Nice, this is one place you must visit.
