Enjoyed Panier even in the rain and cold. It's full of character and represents the true culture of Marseille. Lots of restaurants and small boutiques and art galleries. Street art is exceptional well worth the visit alone. My only regret was not taking an umbrella....More

Marseille cultural inde-world-dog pop art. Tell it ad it is, raw, mixed with "The panning heritage". Boule religion & a slight bourgeois twist. Enjoy M

Le Panier (the basket) is a great neighborhood to get lost in. Old streets with shops and artist's galleries and people who also live there. The restaurants are interesting and not too touristy. It is a uniquely Marseille experience and many of the city landmarks...More

Le Panier is the old part of Marseille, on the hill behind the Vieux Port. It is a good place to wander and enjoy the narrow streets and little shops. Definitely worth some time - it is not a very big area.

In fact it's quite easy to find your way around this little muddle of ancient streets arranged like a north african medina. The shops and houses have a beautiful charm although they also have a certain boho grittiness about them. Graffiti abounds but seems to...More

Enjoy ambling down charming streets, through squares and then visit the stunning Musee D'archeology building. Lovely shops and cafes along the way.

I think visiting alone during the day would be fine. There were some groups of street artists on some of the corners hanging out and playing music. Otherwise you just wander in and out of artistic little stores and galleries. More
