Placed at ahigh vantage point and offering a 360° view of the entire city. Spectacular views.
The Dystopian Nomad and friends stopped over by this beauty of a basilica. But, the trip upwards to the basilica, and on food is not for the faint of heart. We basically duped ourselves into thinking that we can easily do it, and by the time we realised the task, it was too late and we had to keep going. So, the basilica offers an impressive 360° view of the entire city of Marseille. Amazing and stunning views up to the peripheries of Marseille. Simply beautiful. The Basilica itself is also a work of wonder. We went up into the crypt, which has a sort of mini chapel and alter inside it. Then we went up and visited the main chapel, which is gorgeous. The terrasse which surrounds the church offers breath taking views. Do visit this church, it is a very lovely place.

You see it everywhere you go
Ii suppose this is the Marseille equivalent of the Eiffel Tower in the sense that wherever you go in the city you seem to still be able to see it. I walked up the hill to reach it, it’s not that demanding. The 360 degree views of the city are amazing.

    Fantastic Views
There is a little train that takes you from near the port all the way to the top, or you can drive. For whatever reason the main church was not open the day we were there but we could get into the crypt. The main attraction is the fantastic view, 360 degrees around, of the city and the sea.

    A great experience here
This is a beautiful church with a beautiful ceiling. There is no admission fee. This building is majestically located on the top of a hill. We took an Uber and got dropped off at the entrance. You can also take a sightseeing bus from Minato City. The view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea from here is beautiful. Highly recommend this attraction.

Beautiful view of Marseille and the harbour
Beautiful church and fabulous view. We took the number 60 bus from the Vieux Port and it worked really well. It’s a bit of a hike on foot otherwise. We didn’t stay too long but it was enough to enjoy the view for miles in all directions and see how huge a city Marseille is. The interior of the church is fascinating either hanging wooden boats of all types within the church itself. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m so glad I finally got up there after seeing the church from afar when I visited Marseille before.

    Go for the Views
A real landmark that we could see from most places, especially our apartment in a nearby tower block. Saw people walking up and down but it’s very easy to drive up to and free to park. Also free to go in. Inside not as impressive as we’d hoped but absolutely wonderful views all over town.

    Worth the trek
Beautiful baroque style cathedral with a nautical twist! My advice take the Petit Train up for 10 Euros.. it’s worth it. Beautiful city views from up top and the inside of Notre Dame is quite beautiful!

A must see in Marseille, La Bonne Mere
Absolutely stunning, moving, the people's church, La Bonne Mere. Be sure to spend lots of time inside looking at the memorials on the walls which are actually paintings, commemorating those that lost their lives, shipwrecks, natural disasters, etc - with La Bonne Mere in the paintings, each and every one of them, watching over the victims. And don't miss the model ships, planes, hanging from the ceiling. Spectacular church. Take local bus #60 to get there and back down, runs very often, super reliable.

    Great views of Marseille
We took the Petit Train tour from the Old Port up to the church and walked around a bit. We did not tour the church as that was an added fee and time was short for us, but would have enjoyed seeing more of the interior. Bathrooms here cost a euro and there is a machine you can use a card to pay with.

The church closes at 18 o'clock. We knew this and went up at 19 to take some pics of the church and maybe enjoy the sunset and the views. Two security people was stopping people at the gate and said that is "ferme" but they still let in people who were smart enough to say that they are going to the restaurant They were picking the young ladies mostly and the French ones! Poorly organized, we could not understand why we cannot take pics of the basilica from outside.
The view is amazing, the sunset also.
But the church can just stay there, not worth a visit, if they don't value the people who wants to do that.

Staying in Aix en Provence I wanted to see Marseille, having not been there before. The local tourist information office were very helpful and advised the easiest way to travel was on the intercity bus, 10€ return approx 30/45 minutes depending on traffic. Very clean double decker coach took me to the bus station which was next door to train station and metro. Took metro to the Orange Velodrome a very impressive stadium. Metro easy to negotiate as there are only 2 lines.
Took metro back to Old Port and then took the Tourist “Train” to Norte Dame de la Garde, , it was busy but didn’t take long to get on, good multi lingual commentary. It’s a steep climb to the top so well worth the ride up .
Great views of the city and surrounding area from the top, not much shade but cooler in the church ( free to enter) . Church was very ornate. Ride back down to the Old Port for a drink and watch the world go by before slow walk back to the bus station.

Ride the #60 bus up the hill to the church. The neighborhood on the way is unremarkable. When you arrive at the citadel, you are up so high that you can’t see anything but a blur of the city below and a brilliant blue sky. (It’s the same sky that you see down in the Port.) The church? It’s not worth the hike up the steep hill. I’m not sure if this place was even worth the bus fare!

You can either get yoursef there by bus, by the small tourist train or walking up to the hill. It's almost half an hour walk from old port.
The church decoration is very unique and special, with light and dark marble arches.
Moreover the view from the hill is outstanding.

We had just come from Istanbul and I wasn’t expecting to be wowed by the Basilica after having spent time in Ayasofya/Hagia Sophia. But was I wrong.

This church is especially meaningful as it honors and respects the seafaring culture of Marseille. The boats hanging from the ceiling and the numerous markers of thanksgiving and prayer remind you of the close ties between culture and faith.

The church is not large but with grand design. Visitors can take a panoramic view of the city of Marseille after visiting the church as it is located at the highest point. There are shuttle services running between the waterfront and the church.

The Basilique sits atop the highest point near the city and has utterly commanding views. Simply spectacular. The church has a very interesting history and has played a prominent role in city events over the past several centuries. Steeply enmeshed in Marseille’s nautical background, people would come here to seek God’s assistance in the return of loved ones lost at sea. Pictures adorn the walls and model ships hang from the ceiling as expressions of thanks for the safe return of loved ones at risk. It’s a special and touching piece of Marseille’s history and a must-visit here. Lovely in every way.

We can go to Notre Dame de la Garde in walking, with the bus, with the little train... And at the top, there is an incredible 360° view on the France oldest city and on the sea. The church is very beautiful.

The Basilica is a postcard-perfect monument on the hill atop the city. It's a great for views of Marseille (though the city below, lacking the Basilica itself, isn't all that picturesque honestly) and the islands off the coast.

You can see the crypt and main chapel (really amazing decor, don't forget to look up at the ceiling). Be quiet and respectful as it's also a working church where people are praying. There is also a museum (we didn't check it out, I think it was an extra charge) and a little gift shop with religious icons and the usual tourist tat. Suggest donation 1 euro or so to help keep up the church.

Be prepared to walk up a lot of stairs. We got there via the petit tourist train (10 euros adult, 5 euros child) which starts in the old port and stops to let everyone off to visit the Basilica). It was pretty crowded and there was a sign warning of pickpockets. It doesn't really take too long to see the main rooms.

For anyone visiting Marseille this is a must. The views from the top are just spectacular. The basicila itself is fairly impressive if you're into that sort of architecture ( I'm not). Its a very very steep climb up, I really feel unless you are very much into hill walking , take a bus or train. We got the local bus no.60 from the port for just €2, this includes a return journey if you return within the hour. There is a gift shop, restaurant and toilets here.
Its not suitable for anyone with walking or step climbing issues
