As I had purchased a Mont Blanc Unlimited pass this journey was free. I had a week ski holiday & wasn't fit enough to ski all day every day so was able to ski by morning and rest/sightsee by afternoon. This historic train journey was one of several offerings as part of the pass which made it good value. The... More

My daughter had recently studied glaciers so was keen to see this while we were staying in chamonix. Lots of steps so you do need to be quite fit with good mobility. Interesting to see how the glacier has melted quite significantly in recent years. The train ride to get there was good too, great scenery on the way.

The glacier has been reduced to not much and is not that interesting though the glacorium provided a useful insight.

We got the train to the top which is a lovely ride for all ages. At the top a cafe, shop and good views all round. You can get the cable car towards the ice cave, but it is about 400 steps down, then up. We could see resting places but we never went down as too far for my... More

The trip started with a train ride (about 20 minutes). Pretty nice view. At the end of the journey you had two options: walk down to the ice cave (drilled glacier), or ride a cable car. Either way you still need to spend time walking down to the cave...Pretty energy draining imho

Great hiking in the beautiful landscape of Chamonix. We travel down the hill by foot to Mer de Glace ice cave. It was absolutely worth the effort. The mountains surrounding are breathtaking. The ice cave deep blue color is amazing the kids was overwhelmed. Highly recommend.

Great attraction even for family with young children. Our 5 year old and 3 year old did walk all those 420+ steps twice. We spent all day there. We parked at chamonix for free. Went shopping in the town for sandwiches and took the train up. We had a lovely picnic at the top before going down to la mer... More

There are plus and minus sides to this visit. It would be perfect to visit a glacier without the crowds, but it's great to use the train to get up high, so you can't complain when everyone else does that too! We did one of the numerous walking trails which run from the hotel near the Montenvers glacier station. There... More

The Montvenvers Train Station is quite close to Chamonix Mont Blanc Railway Station. We took the train to the top and visited the glaciorium. It was a very beautiful depiction of the effect of climate change on glaciers. We had planned to visit the ice caves, but the gondola was closed due to weather conditions. We visited in summer (July),... More
