Not the best, not the worst
There is no English signage. There is a laminated card in English that is almost clear to follow. There is a lovely, expensive shop. It costs 3 euros and is on the Lyon city card. I would not go out if your way to visit. We were in Croix-Rousse anyway and followed Google map directions to get here.

Good museum, but take a guided tour
Great museum, not only if you are into fabrics and textiles but also to get a general view on what made Lyon so rich in the 19th century. It is very small but all the relevant machinery is present. However, if I'd ever come back, I would opt for a guided tour because now, we lacked a little visualization with the machines. (Information is mostly in French, very little English)

We ended up visiting 3 silk sites (didn't have time to do the 4th) and the best one was Maison des Canuts.
When we were considering visiting Lyon we never even knew about the "silk tour." And after we did know, we didn't jump at the chance to do any of the sites. However, we ended up doing 3 of them (didn't have time to do the 4th) and loved it. The best one was Maison des Canuts. Our guide, Maria, was fantastic and gave us a really interesting demonstration of the silk loom.

This was the worst visit we have had in many years traveling all over the world. It is only two rooms. The local silk shops in Lyon are better museums than this. Plus, a group of school children came in to use the one toilet. Paying visitors, us, were left stranded. We left and found a hospitable bar down the street: used the facilities and had a nice coffee. Do not go to Mason des Canuts

It is a must go after the unique Lyon Textile Museum for people who want to know more about the Lyon's silk industry which began in the 15th and 16th centuries.
This place located on the Croix-Rousse plateau,an area built in the XIX to welcome the silkweavers workshops displays several looms, posters,a weaving demonstration and houses a silk shop of reliable stuff.
The best thing to do is to follow one of the 2 daily guided tours at 11:00am and 3:30pm where you'll get explanations about the canuts life, silk history and see loom demonstration.

opening hours:10am to 6pmfrom Tuesday to Saturday.
free entrance,guided tour:6 euro,free under 12

For me, seeing this museum was absolutely necessary because the silk industry was why I wanted to be in Lyon, but it was almost painful to be there with the idle looms because I wish they were still producing the beautiful fabrics for which Lyon is famous.

You see the explanation of silk production, from moth to thread, as well as a detailed account of how the industry began and peaked. There is a loom that makes gold passementerie, stopped while weaving an example. That exhibit was the most illuminating for me.

In the gift shop, some lovely scarves are available for prices that are less than highway robbery.

The silk shop offered two tours. We paid 3.5 euros for the first tour, which took everyone to a separate room where there was a silk weaving machine. We stayed in that room for the entire "tour" (about 20 minutes) listening to the guide. The information was supposed to be in French and English. However, the guide would say something for about 5 minutes in French and then 2 sentences in English. We don't know any French. At the end, we didn't get any information out of the tour. I felt offended, because it was supposed to be a tourist attraction, and yet the guide didn't care to communicate with the English speaking tourists.

Lyon has once had a huge silk industry but sadly all that remains is this so-called museum which is just two rooms with no information or tours in English and a handful of overpriced silk items for sale. Does not qualify as a museum or must-see in Lyon. Needs somebody with drive, creativity and marketing ambition to make this something interesting for tourists to visit. Very sad as this is one of the very few 'tourist attractions' in the city.

Not much to see for 2 euro if you don't take the tour (just two small rooms) - and the tour is only in French. You could have a brochure in English to sort of follow along (if you paid to go on the tour) but we chose not too.

This small museum was educating about the silk industry in the area. It houses various looms, tools, wheels and gadgets associated with the production of silk fabric. This was a large industry here in the 18th century. Also, of interest was learning how the workers formed unions to stand up to the owners who kept reducing wages to increase profits.
As part of the museum, there is a shop with hand painted silk scarves of varying prices. I did purchase a few gifts here and the recipients really loved them.
