It is all a fake but it seems all true. A grey wall host an entire world, with cats, cars, shops, people, flowers, kids. The most beautiful and largest murale art in Lyon and one of the best I have ever seen

Oh my gosh, this tompe l'oeil mural, of average residents of Lyon, is really impressive. For cat lovers, I counted at least three of them. My husband said to me "Ah, we're here." And I said "Where is it?; I don't see anything." He said, "That's because it is so well done. It's right in front of you." And it WAS!

The mural is huge and impressive. We found the building easily with a little help from google maps. Admire the work from a distance. Get yourself clicked with mural in the background. The metro is minutes away , in case you plan to travel to another place.

Amazing artistry if you are in the Croix-Rousse area and need a 15 minute diversion, or you enjoy street art and murals and want to take an easy ride on the C metro to the Henon station (a short walk downhill rather than an uphill walk). There are several other murals (labeled as frescoes on the tourism map) that are worthwhile also. Sit and enjoy!

Don't miss this. Take the metro to the Henon station and walk down from there. It's easier than walking uphill from the Croix Rousse station which is what the guide books recommend

Le Mur Des Canuts is an amazing trompe l'oeil, which covers a surface of 1,200m², it is hard to believe it is a flat surface, it is so life like. My husband wasn’t looking properly and approached the ATM to get money out. There is so much happening in this mural and the detail is superb.

The idea came about in 1986 to cover an ugly wall and create a mural, which captured the Croix Rousse area and those who live there. The “Canuts”, the silk workers of the 19th century who lived in the neighbourhood are acknowledged, as spools of silk thread and a loom can be seen in the shop, Reves de Soie/Silk Dreams. Guignol the puppet can also be seen, he represented the silk workers.

The first mural was painted in 1987, it proved to be a great success. In 1997, the 1987 mural was painted over and altered to keep up with the times, the shape of most of the buildings stayed the same, albeit with a new paint job but the characters had aged 10 years. Come 2013, it was time for another update, it was to once again reflect the times and age the characters another 14-15 years, with also giving them families. The mural was created by CitéCréation.

To the left of the mural is a section with all the relevant information, which is worth reading. Another mural called Fresque des Lyonnais, (800 square metres) which is also incredible, is only 1.5 kilometres away, (Google Maps) between the two of them, couldn’t pick a favourite.

This huge trompe l'oeil painting made by professional street artists depicts life in the neighbourhood. It is beautiful to see and its story is fascinating. The painting has a "shelf life" of 10 years so they repaint it every decade to make sure it evolves. Excellent guided tour from the office du tourisme highly recommended. Free with the purchase of the Lyon city card.

The biggest wall painting in Europe , just 3 metro stations from the hotel the ville, 1 minute walking from the Hennon station, line C. Beatifull and impressive. The kids really enjoyed it and we felt the same. It has so many details and it is very colorful. Nothing else to do there, you can take the metro spend 30 minutes infront of thw wall and go back with the same tickets which are valid for an hour.

If you enjoy free and very clever artwork then go to the tourist office and ask for a list of the Muras (murals).
Then with a day metro/tram ticket be prepared for some outstanding art in an outdoor gallery that stretches across the city.

The Lyonese have developed an art style that takes otherwise blank walls, ends of buildings etc, to create huge works of art that are fascinating, fun and very clever.

The one up at Croix Rousse, is huge and at first glance you think it is the continuation of the road but up a stairway, but then close inspection reveals more and more little details of everyday life in Lyon.

Some such as those along the banks of the Soane, have taken everyday scenes such as bookshops and boulangeries etc and painted them in full size, complete with customers walking out of the shops, pigeons perched, scooters parked etc and you swear at first glance it is all real.

Another depicts a building with balconies, and on each balcony are famous Lyonese people such as the Lumiere brothers.

Going towards Part Dieu, an entire city block of apartment buildings has each end of each block painted with ideas of cities, past and present.

These murals are a wonderful part of Lyon and makes the visitor look up and look closer at what is around.

We caught a tram and then the funicular up to Croix-Rousse. Croix-Rousse is known as the “hill that works”, as it was where the silk workers had their home factories in the 19Century.
In 1987 it was decided that A blank wall in the area which was an eyesore, would be painted to celebrate the lives of the silk workers. It’s the biggest fresco or TROMPE l’Oeil in Lyon. And there are a few other really good works.
I loved that well known characters of Lyon are depicted on this wall and many of their stories. It’s amazingly realistic. And is a reminder of the contribution of these hard working people or Canuts.
