Wonderful to literally stumble upon this as we were walking the town. Great for photos (very picturesque) and for marvelling at how something so old can still be standing and accessible to us in this century.

We were just wandering around town and stumbled upon these ruins. It's not a large area but it's nice to see them.

You have to admire the ancient Romans for their sense of adventure and ever onward conquest of so much land. They left their mark all across Europe and today we can see what a powerful empire they were. This is a area easily reached by foot and all the Roman ruins are very near each other. It really helps to read about the area before visiting. There are a few guide signs but to get the full story you should do some research. Quite interesting. Cybele was actually a godess that predated the Romans. These ruins were discovered while modern-day construction was underway.

Gallo-Roman ruins in the form of housing, terraces, theatre, temple and arcade and portico, make up the Jardin de Cybele which was a hospital before excavations began. Gardens are named for the mother goddess Cybele, after excavations in 1938 found a fragment of bas-relief dedicated to her. Further excavations were carried out 1945-1968 and discovered an underground room, with pools and small rooms next to the temple and theatre, both dedicated to Cybele. The arcade dated 2nd century AD is believed to part of the forum. The forum portico has a lovely bas-relief frieze of foliage and mask dated 1st century AD. Really lovely area to walk around, however found it difficult to work out, what is what, with regards to the ruins and found the information boards not that helpful, or maybe we just missed them. Have a look at the timber frame wall house, on La Place du Pilori dated 15th-16th century located next to the arcade and portico.
