I spent a day in Black Forest. Started the road B500 from Baden- Baden to the lake. It’s a gorgeous drive and scenery. There are some hiking path and walking tracks, short and long if you have time to do. Loved spending a day there.

The High Road or Hochstrasse runs from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt through the northern half of the Black Forest and makes for a stunning drive. The weather is interchangeable being in the mountains and consequently views can be masked by mountain cloud but when clear is stunning across the Rhine and the French border.
There were many pleasing sites including good views as you climbed out of Baden-Baden. Our first attraction was a lovely walk in Sasbachwalden which was a short way off the highway and down into the valley. The one hour Gaisholl waterfall walk followed a stream with many small falls and bridges through peaceful forest. Then we drove to Mummelsee which is a high mountain lake with a circular walk around it and a nice cafe and souvenir stores. The cafe is well regarded for its blackforest cake. After taking in the views from Hornisgrinde Viewpoint we continued on down another side road to Allerheiligen which has a ruined kloister and a waterfall walk. The fall is spectacular and in many stages and again can be done in a bit under an hour.
Overall we could have spent several days exploring the immediate area and can guarantee it is a lovely must see.

We were lucky and had fantastic weather the day we took an almost day long tour along the hochstrasse. Great views, lots of photo ops. You can see Switzerland and France on a clear day. Great places to stop for delicious food too! See my review on the Mummelsee Hotel - we stopped there for lunch. We were also fortunate to have rented an Audi - super fun - be prepared for great corners and wonderful stretches of road - really memorable driving experience. Will do this again when back in Germany for sure!

The Black Forest was a disappointment compared to expectations. Maybe it's because we Italians are used to Trentino Alto Adige, but I really wouldn't go back here. Lots of greenery, woods, characteristic villages, but the excursions were a disappointment, I repeat, being used to the Dolomites... but I expected much more. There is certainly no shortage of peace and tranquility even in August. But as I looked at the Germans I thought: of course, as far as the territory is concerned, they have to be very satisfied compared to us! That's why they invade Italy in August

The drive is incredible from Freudenstadt to Baden-Baden. An easy day trip from Stuttgart through lots of tiny, picturesque villages and the larger city of Freudenstadt. When you reach the Hochstrasse on the other side of Freudenstadt you will immediately want to relish the views. On either side of the road the scenery is spectacular. France/Germany to one side and the valleys of the Schwarzwald to the other, it is not to be missed if you live in the area. It is a gorgeous drive in either direction. There are many scenic stopping points along the way and the Mummelsee, an ancient glacial lake, is a nice, if touristy, resting point for a drink, ice cream or meal. If you feel adventurous you can take one of the side roads that lead you off the Hochstrasse down into one of the Valleys below and one of the quaint little villages there. It's a lovely drive at any time of year but spring and fall and summer are the best bet unless you are looking for small skiing venues. The road is icy and snowy sooner and longer than other parts of the Schwarzwald so keep that in mind if you traveling in late fall or early spring.

My husband and I drove the road to the Black Forest. I feel like it is overrated. To me it was just a windy road up a mountain.

Black Forest road at 1032 m above sea level.
The blackforest is known for its black forest cakes and Cuckoo clocks . The place is dotted with quaint cafés and souviner shops.
A definite must see if you are in Germany .
There r a lot of tour groups that do the Black Forest day trips . Alternatively if you want to get a feel of the place one can even stay at the Black Forest.
The drive up to the high road in itself is amazing the fresh air the dense forest it's heaven...

Breath taking view of the lake! This place is beautiful in any season. You will enjoy just being around the lake for several hours. The view is mesmerizing! There are few souvenirs shops near the lake from where highly recommended is buying the famous German Cukoo clock! Dont forget to try the Black Forest cake which had originated from here. The place is reachable by Train and is worth a visit on a holiday!

The route, 500, started at Baden-Baden (in the north of Black Forest) and takes you to Freudenstadt. We travelled by camper and the road takes you through the forest. The road is wide enough and there are not many hairpins.

We definitely recommend this route if you are visiting the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in Germany. We took it from Bade-Baden, stopped at Buhl, Mummelsee and then Wolfach. Fall is an especially beautiful time of the year to visit. Gorgeous views with many photo opportunities.

We are planning to rent a car and do this drive in September. Will we need a good road map or is the B500 well marked?
Written 23 September 2019
It is well marked. I navigated using Google Maps on my phone.
