The “Schwabentor” or the “Swabian Gate”, also called “Obertor” in the Middle Ages, is the most recent of the two remaining city gates of the medieval defensive wall of “Freiburg im Breisgau”. The gate tower was built around the year 1250 and was originally open towards the inside of the city and was only enclosed with a stone wall in the year 1547. In the year 1572, a stair turret was added; in the same year Matthias Schwäri painted a picture of a merchant with a cart on the inner wall. In the 19th century, this picture sparked a legend about a Swabian man who came to Freiburg with two barrels full of gold to buy the town. He was ridiculed, especially after it turned out that the barrels only contained sand and pebbles. Before his departure, his wife had secretly replaced the gold with a worthless filling.

The Schwabentor was the entrance to the old town for everybody coming from east, meaning the black forest. The Street leading from there into the center ist called Salt Street, Salzstrasse, and marks an old celtic trading route. Why it is called the "Swabian" Gate is a long story that you better find out attending one of the fabulous guided tours, many of them provided in English.

It's a short walk from the centre of Freiburg and has some nice streets to walk through on the way. There is nothing really except the gate (tor) once you get there and if you go through it you will come to the ring road which circles Freiburg. Tick...
