Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When you are standing with your back turned towards the Cathedral you will see the “Historical Merchants' Hall”, the historic department store is one of the outstanding buildings in Freiburg im Breisgau, this on the south side of “Münsterplatz”, which it dominates with its red facade. The first municipal department store was a building for the municipal market administration for goods handling and customs clearance in Freiburg and was built in the “Schusterstrasse” and this in the 14th century, they mentioned about it in the year 1378. Than in the year 1520 the current building towards Münsterplatz was turned north of the old department store with a view of the Freiburg Minster built. The completion of the "new department store" is dated on the year 1532. The department store was later redesigned several times. In the year 1550 a balcony was added, after the sieges of the city in the year 1714 and the 1744 war damage had to be remedied, in the year 1814 the facade was repainted by Simon Göser.

Historisches Kaufhaus, from 1532 or Historical Merchant House located on Munsterplatz, on plaza where the magnificent Munster Cathedral is (from its side). Now, salute the Habsburgs, who are represented by the statues and the coat of arms on the Historical Merchant House. This was the trading and customs center in the 16th century, and briefly housed the state parliament after the war. Its deep red color can be found on several other buildings in town. During the Middle Ages around here, a red paint job on a building indicated it was a place where you'd be required to pay a tax or fee. Voilà!!!

The inside of this building is not particularly remarkable. But the outside is one of the great views of Freiburg and should not be missed. In the evenings there might be a chamber concert in the great hall. Go if you can.

An old and imposing building, very nicely restored. It attracts attention with its red-brick colored facade decorated with statues. You cannot fail to notice it, because it is located right next to the cathedral.

The historic "Kaufhaus" (Merchant's Hall, 1520-30) is a symbol of the importance of trade in medieval Freiburg. Between 1520 and 1532, Lienhart Müller constructed the department store located on Münsterplatz for the municipal market management. The emblems and the statues on the main façade created by Hans Sixt von Staufen depict a reverence to the house of Habsburg.
The municipal market, customs and financial administration building is identified as a center of trade by its arcades hall. Its façade is decorated with coats of arms and statues indicating the city's links with the House of Habsburg.
There are many beautiful rooms inside:
*Emperor Hall: Here kings and emperors were already a guest and therefore the largest room in the Historical Department Store also bears the name "Imperial Hall".
*Fireplace Room: Personal encounters are with the essence of receptions and banquets.
*Rococo Hall: Virtuoso ceiling ornaments from the 18th century stretches like an artful sky over the guests of receptions and banquets.
*Historical Tavern: The smaller and confidential Historic room in the second floor of the historic department store is a real insider tip: set up in the 19th century.
*The courtyard: is well-known for classic open-air events and can be decorated in style for receptions.

This old house is very beautiful, at least from the outside.
However, it was hard to have a good look at it since there were many booth in front of it (probably due to the daily food market) that allowed us to have a look only on the second floor and roof...

You will not miss this if you are at munster platz. This is just right opposite the side of the cathedral. Definitely check out the building structure and take some photos. We saw some book sales there but that's about it.

By going /walking to the Munster Cathedral, you will logically pass the Historisches Kaufhaus, a building once owned by a group of merchants in the 17th century. Outside is rather good preserved, but nothing is going on/to see at the inside.

This is one of the historic buidlings in Freiburg (I think it was restored following damage in the Second World War). I was there for a function, and there was an excellent dinner. However, its the surroundings that are important and certainly worth a visit.

Great for picture taking. Usually, it is quite busy around the Cathedral where this building is also on display. Try taking a picture without the cars parked in front of it.
