The Heidelberg Thingstätte is an open-air theatre on the Heiligenberg. It was built as a multi-disciplinary outdoor theatre which enjoyed brief popularity in pre-war Nazi Germany. Nice place to go for hiking and have a panoramic view.

This is said to be a Nazi era outdoor amphitheater for political rallies and such. It's a nice walk up from town but a map of all the trails helps a lot. I think there is a bus that goes up most of the way as well. The amphitheater is quite large, all built of local stone and carved into... More

We went up the hill (the Heiligenberg) with the car. It takes another 600m from the parking lot to the Thingstatte. When we arrived, a group of three was filming a song performance. It was quite amazing how the wall behind the "stage" reflects the sounds in such a way that we could listen to the singing performance from the... More

It's a really huge and beautifully laid out outdoor stadium set into the side of the mountain. But I dare you not to think of it filled with people in the National Socialist era. For history enthusiasts, should not be missed, though it is definitely very unsettling.

You don't have to hike up a steep hill for two hours to find this ... But it's not made easy by the lack of signage. Thanks to a fellow Trip Advisor from Utah who gave us the tip about a Restaurant near the top! ... It's called Waldschenke ... and the satnav found it straight away using "Auf dem... More

It's a bit of a hike up the hill, maybe a couple of miles, but the trail is well kept and well marked. The view at the top is amazing and the amphitheater itself is quite striking. None of the history markers are in English so a German English dictionary is helpful. Key advice: bring some water and wear durable... More

It's quite the hike to climb the mountain above the Philosophenweg but well worth it to view the Thîngstatt, built by the Nazis before WWII. Be sure to walk to the very top for great views of the Thîngstatt as well as the St. Michael's monastery ruins at the top of the mountain! Lovely walk through old growth trees!

While you can drive to Thingsstätte, it's a far nicer route to take the Philsophers' Walk from town, which is an occasionally steep and sometimes stepped trail. There are lookout points along the way with fantastic views back over the city. Thingsstätte itself seems so out of place. It's an open air amphitheatre on top of the hill, built by... More

Thingstatte is a particular place with its fascinating history. It is also a good hike to go up there especially on the 30th of April.

Rather hard always to rate something like this. As a former site built and used to promote Nazi propoganda, it has a lot of historical interest. I appreciated that it is now open in the broadest sense of the word, not hidden away. Acknowledged.
