Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The garden front of the house is painted with a fresco by Franz Zwinck, 1784, depicting the denunciation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate (hence how the building got it's name). Frescos on buildings are very unique to Oberammergau and have been meticulously maintained over the centuries by extremely talented artists. And, there are many talented artists who work in the building who you can talk to about their work. We ate our takeout lunch on a bench in the garden and it was nice to get some Vitamin D and enjoy he flowers. I'm grateful that the plan to turn the house into a parking lot didn't happen.

We wandered around Oberammergau ourselves, without a tour group or audio guide & we really had no idea where to go or what to look at. There were beautiful painted buildings everywhere - but we had no idea what we were looking at or which direction to go next. It's a shame that these days you have to spend $$ to get any advice - we had expected there to be a little more in the way of signage I suppose. The town was absolutely beautiful though - it's all a very small area and extremely beautiful & absolutely worth the visit - just do more research before you leave if you're not escorted! Also worth mentioning - the Christmas shops were VERY overpriced!! Shop at the markets elsewhere in Europe instead!

A beautiful garden in the heart of Oberammergau. I sat on the bench for a few minutes just taking in the gardens with the mountains in the background. You have to go here.

There are many beautiful painted houses here and this was the most beautiful and elaborate. It is enjoyable to just walk around the streets as all the streets are colorful.

The paints outside are perfect and well maintained, there is a sign outside with a number to call to receive the audioguide about the history of this place. Deserves a visit!

Our guide, Constantine, took us to see this beautifully decorated house and explained about the artist and the process he used. It is an amazing piece of art - so realistic!

There is a nice little garden outside the building. However, as we just went to Mirabelle garden in Sazlburg, so we did not have much fancy on this garden. There are few artists doing their fine art work inside the Pilatuhaus of which you are welcomed to observe.

Very attractively painted house with attractive garden. Inside it is now turned over to various arts and crafts with a jeweller, glass worker and wood carver active during our visit. Little or explanation of the house or its history. Held our attention for all of 10 minutes.

The town of Oberommergau is quiet and interesting but not espeically exciting. The Pilate house was interesting because there was an artist carving wood there that would talk to you explain what he was doing. This is a good rainy day stop. It's free to go in and look around so there is no reason not too go if you are in town.

Oberammergau is a nice stop if you're in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip unless you haven't seen any medieval towns. We were there in July and half the roads were all completely torn up without any pavement. The painted buildings are quaint and the town makes a nice stop for lunch.
