Easier to Get To Than Zugspitze

For those staying in Garmisch- the Alpsptize is much closer, even walkable, than having to drive to Zugspitze. Great views of the valley and a really nice eatery at the top.

Not the highest spot in the Alps, but the availability of food, views, and cost make this a great day trip.

I took my 8 and 10 year old sons up the Alpspitz while spouse was in a conference. We had a great time. We rode up one cable car, then across on the next one to a spot where there is a cafe/restaurant, lounge chairs, and plenty of marked hiking trails. We hiked around for a while before taking the... Our visit to Alpspitze definitely shaved a couple years off my life due to the wind. Our ride up via the Alpspitzbahn wasn't too bad, and offered better views than that of Zugspitze because it wasn't as crowded. However, the ride on Hochalmbahn (to get off the peak) was frightening to the extreme. I would advise that you give yourself... More

The ride up was great to see. Once up top there where a few trails right at the top. The walk way was steel grate so you could see below you. We took the one trail and they had a story along the trail. Along the trail there were stops to rest and relax. There are a couple of restaurants... More

We rode the cable car up to the top where the views were amazing. We then decided to hike down to a lower gondola to ride back down. We had a magnificently sunny day.

We didn't think we were up for the hike up so we took the cable car up and hiked down. We got there for the first cable car at 8 am (or maybe it was 8:30) -lots of parking and not crowded(!) and went up with 20-something mountaineers with all of their gear- you can make the difficult ascent from...
