Overrated reputation.
Yes, the building is old, but that's not enough to get excited about. The place is quite dirty, most people don't shower before going into the water, and many people undress in full view... For a moment of relaxation we're far from it.

As a long time nudist who has lived in a land based club for twenty years I thought this would be a great place to relax during my trip to Munich. Sadly it turned out to be the low point of my entire trip to Europe. First I had a difficult time figuring out how to enter through the turnstyle with the key/card system. There was no English signage and the attendant was not enthusiastic about helping me out. Once I finally gained entrance I had no clue where the changing/locker rooms were. Again no signage and no one was willing to explain. Once I stumbled into the locker area after several trials and errors I decided to try out the swimming pool. When I entered the pool in the nude with my towel I was met with a furious woman who motioned me out of the swimming area. She was followed by a man waving his arms at me and yelling at me al the way down the hallway. I was advised when I paid my fee that the swimming pool would be open for an hour and had been advised that nudity was mandatory in the facility. I then proceeded to the hot tub at the end of the hall where nudity was required. A woman who was in the hot tub was scolded for wearing a swimming suit. She joked with me that I was scolded for being nude in the swimming area and she was scolded for being clothed in the hot tub. Both of us could have saved face had there been better communication. Communication in the form of multi lingual maps and instructions would have gone a long way toward alleviating these misunderstandings and perhaps making this a happy experience. Also attendants with better customer service skills would have gone a long way toward making this a better experience. I really felt frustrated having spent I believe about 20 Euros and spending no more than twenty minutes. I was even concerned about leaving in anticipation of not understanding the card/key system and knowing that the attendant was condescending. I reserve judgment as to whether this would be a favorable experience for German speaking individuals, but one would think that given the International tourism to Munich that a simple multi lingual map and signage would go a long way.

I am a regular visitor of this bath house and would recommend anyone visiting Munich to definitely give it a try. Your first visit maybe a bit confusing because of lack signs and instructions in English language so I will explain the procedure for accessing the sauna area a bit - You first have to pay at the reception desk for access to either swimming pool or sauna (both have different tariffs and the price for admission in sauna includes access to the swimming pool as well) you will then be given a RFID card, if you paid for the sauna the entrance will be to the left of the reception counter and for swimming pool on the right. You scan your RFID card on a machine located next to the entrance and then go through a turnstile to enter the sauna area, there immediately on your left would be stairs leading to the changing rooms and next to the stairs are small lockers, you first have to choose a locker here and put in your valuables like money and cellphone and then put your rfid card in the card slot in these lockers, doing so will release a numbered key and this number corresponds to a locker upstairs where you can change (keep your key on you at all times to not lose it!)
Do note that the whole sauna area including the changing rooms is completely nude and coed and wearing your swimming suits is strictly forbidden which really isn't a big issue after the first few minutes.

As mentioned in other reviews, there is no English signage & minimal signage in German (which I speak). If you don't know the procedure from a previous visit - too bad. You're on your own here. Like in other baths/spas in Germany there are two sets of lockers. The first is for your valuables and the second is for your clothes. You first put your cell phone, wallet, & jewelry in a tiny lock box on a wall. The boxes are numbered from 1 to about 400. The lock box number you choose to store your valuables will be the same number for locker where you will put you clothes. This is where a sign would be appropriate - there's no warning that certain numbers are for the lockers in the male changing room & the rest are for the female changing room. (I THINK (!) the lower numbers are for the male locker room.) Save yourselves the embarrassment I (a male) suffered by choosing a lock box with a high number only to find out the corresponding clothes locker was in the female section.

Went to the Mullersches Volksbad for lap swimming and a sauna visit. A beautiful and well-kept facility, it was worth the relaxing visit. Each visitor pays inside the front door and is issued a magnetic key card. The card is coded for what you are going to do and for how long. Choices are for the pool areas, for the sauna area, or for both. If you specify a 3 hour visit and end up staying longer, the exit gate will request additional euros before you can exit. After entering, find the small security boxes (for your valuables), deposit your valuables, put the card key into the slot and remove the key (which you take upstairs to the co-ed locker rooms). Heading out to the pool and sauna, the key is strapped on your wrist with an integral magnetic "key" to use for re-entry to the lockers after leaving the pools.
The pools are very nice with vaulted ceilings and lots of tile work. Over one-hundred years old, the structure appears in great shape. The water quality is good. The larger of the two pools where we swam laps appears about 30m long.
The sauna area is simple but effective in unwinding. It has a large warm pool with an adjacent cold plunge. A shower room is nearby, as well as cold showers. There are at least three dry saunas. The wet sauna is absolutely awesome. Just inside the door, a steam pipe spews a constant stream of hot to warm steam. You can see only about one meter and you melt in relaxation as you are enveloped in the cloud. An extra treat was when the attendant came in, first with salt and later with honey. To fully enjoy that moment, make sure your mate is with you so you can exfoliate and slather each other...delectable, I tell ya!
One last thing, occasionally in the dry sauna, the attendant will come in, douse the hot rocks with water, sprinkle on some eucalyptus, twirl a small towel overhead to blend the aroma, and then, while holding the towel taunt between her hands, she forcefully fans all present. The waves of hot, aromatic air will push you over the relaxation edge. Top this off with a cold shower and you will leave feeling like a million bucks...have fun!

A bit pricey but worth it.
Beautiful architecture in downtown Munich.
Swimming pools on one side and saunas and baths on the other.
Yes, it is coed bathing, yes everybody is nude, all ages but mostly men and women in late 20's-mid 30's.
For Germans is common to be nude in saunas and if you're American like myself, you'll get used to it in about 5min. People are respectful and nobody will judge you so just do it. It's not sexual at all but it is very relaxing.

There's no point denying it, this old world spa is expensive but it is simply beautiful. Nothing like it exists in the U.K. Take your own towel and pack some flip flops, this is a great place to unwind the morning after. Be warned though, it's not for the shy!

I think the first thing you need to know about this beautiful bath house, built in 1901, is that there are two sides to it. On the swimming side, it is like a beautiful municipal pool with deco decor. Lions spout water into the pools through their mouths. The ceilings have mouldings with snakes and lizards and the setting is extraordinary.
The other side of the spa is dedicated to FKK (Freien Körper Kultur) which means the steam bath, saunas and soaking pools (both warm and cold) are mixed sex and naked. (And to the person who found this a waste of money, Yes, you are supposed to cover up as you move between one area and another, (although there were some unclothed men around and I did not see anyone complain about their nakedness.) )
The sauna/steam bath area also has gorgeous decor, with heads of satyrs and the Medusa looking on as you move from the cold pool to the warmer soaking pool. There are three levels of heat for the warm "sauna" baths and an additional actual wood benched sauna with Aufguß (infusion). You pay for a period of time (up to 4 hours for around 20+ Euros) and receive a card which you use to enter the gate through the card reader. You then lock your wallet and card in a little post box and get a key to a particular changing room, where you can don your bathing suit for the swimming side or your towel/sheet (yes 5 Euros extra if you don't bring your own) for the sauna/steam rooms. You can go between the two areas as much as you like, but need to be clothed for the swimming/exercise pool side of the Volksbad. It is a wonderfully luxurious experience. It can be a bit confusing the first time you go, but if you let the people know you are confused they will help you (even if you don't speak German).

I’ve been reading about these baths near the Deutsches Museum for several years as one of the ‘must do’ things in Munich. Having taken a liking to the sauna and therme tradition of Germany, and finding myself with a couple hours on my hands, I decided to give this historic location a try.
In all fairness, my wife and I have visited some very nice spas in Europe, so I admit that my opinion of THIS spa/schwimmbad/sauna is at least a little skewed, (Maybe even a bit harsh!) but still….
As you approach the building, it is quite imposing along the river banks (literally across the street from the Deutsches Museum). I thought, “this is gonna be great!” Once inside however, I found a few things to be more challenging than I had expected.
• I was unable to locate a map of the place, and after looking at the menu of fees; I still was unable to figure out exactly what I was asking for.
• The person working the admission booth was quite friendly, but apparently had NO English whatsoever. I’m good with that, but…
• Signage around the place was sort of hit and miss, especially since you have to leave some of your belongings in a small box near the attendant, (who also only spoke German, but was significantly more curt!)
• I kept thinking I would find a map of the place so I would know where the various baths and saunas were located. If such a thing exists, it’s still a mystery to me. At one point, I made my way into the hall with the main pool wrapped only in a towel, only to find the door (that would lead me back to the sauna) locked behind me. Finally figured out my wristband would unlock the door, after a bit of wondering how I would negotiate getting out of the spa in only a towel.
• But most importantly, assuming I found all the major features on offer, I was a little surprised there wasn’t more there. Granted, I was there on a Wednesday afternoon, but having said that, I was surprised to find the only two dozen or so other patrons in the entire place, and most of them were, shall we say, of the elder population.
All the reports about the beauty of the facility are true, as it was certainly a gem of the late 19th century, and has been well preserved. Somehow, I think that I expected there would be a bit more in the sauna area, and that even if exclusively in German, the staff would be a bit more helpful to a wayward and weary tourist.
Maybe three or four stars on another day with a different attendant working the locker room, but not this time around!

Müllersches Volksbad is located near the City Center of Munich. It's a public swimming hall w/ two large pools on one side & baths, saunas, & a steam room on the other. It's very relaxing & costs a lot less then spas in the U.S. However, one thing to keep in mind is that it's mixed and nude bathing in the saunas & steam room. It's not a big deal to the Germans & won't be a big deal after the 1st three minutes. The idea is health & relaxation.
