This hospital was built on the island of River Pegnitz (Insel Schütt) between 1331-41. It’s a beautiful old timber frame house. We walked there and saw the nice old buildings and courtyards, the famous ancient church where there were many valuable treasure. We enjoyed the calm, quiet vibe and took lots of photos.

Most of travellers just make pictures of the building from the bridge, but you can also go to the inner yard, which is nice, peaceful and not crowded. To get there you can either go round the building and pass through the entrance in front of Schuldturm, or go to the Heilig-Geist-Spital restaurant, pass the arch and turn left just in front of the restaurant entrance. There will be a door, which is not locked, check out the picture I attached.

The Heilig Geist Spital - or the Holy Spirit hospice if you like - is 1 of the landmarks of Nuremberg that has more than 500 years of history.
For those into history the best would be to have a guide explaining the history behind the place, nonetheless even is you are on your own you can/shall include this place into the must see landmarks of Nuremberg old town.
You can access the building and the inner courtyard through the restaurant's portal (you can also check-out the restaurant - very good place to grab some food).
Visiting is free of charge.
Overall I do recommend you spend some time and check out this place.

Heilig-Geist-Spital (Holy Spirit Hospital) was built in the early 14th-century and was the largest hospital in the city of Nuremburg for centuries. It was built partly over the Pegnitz, giving this historic landmark building an attractive appearance, worth spending a few minutes to enjoy when sightseeing in the city centre of Nuremburg.

The hospital building now serves as a restaurant so you can visit the inside and have a meal here as well. Alternatively, you can simple enjoy seeing the architecture of this important heritage building as well as its beautiful setting amongst the banks of the Pegnitz.

Tip: Very good pictures can be taken from Museumsbrücke, the bridge just to the west of Heilig-Geist-Spital.

My husband and I were visiting Nuremberg during a river cruise, along with a group of other seniors. During a walking tour of central square, we visited many of the churches, the beautiful fountain, and museums. The most photographic view we found was the Heilig-Geist-Spital (Hospice of the Holy Spirit).

We were fortunate to have had a fluent English speaking local guide who provided us with an extensive history of these important attractions. To summarize, "Heilig-Geist-Spital was built in 1332 by Konrad Gross, city mayor, one of the richest men in town. It is the most beautiful view of the biggest institution for the poor in the imperial city. The inner courtyards are accessible from the Spitalgasse through the restaurant's portal. However, although this was a lesson in history and a photo op, we did not go to the restaurant. Maybe next time.

Our Vantage River Splendor docked along the river in Nuremberg just outside the city center. In spite of its reputation for being the place for Hitler’s rallies and the Nuremberg trials, Nuremberg has many sites of interest. It is an old town surrounded by a moat and walls with 80 towers. The Pegnitz River runs through it and affords some beautiful places to photograph.
We boarded a bus for a tour of Nuremberg. During our free time, we had the opportunity to walk the city. One of the most beautiful places you can visit is along the Pegnitz River. There are four islands in the river and 9 bridges. One of the neatest things is that the buildings seem to hang over by the river’s edge. The Holy Spirit Hospital in Nuremberg is located here. It was one of the largest hospitals of the Middle Ages, and was founded in 1332. There was a separate building to house the lepers. Some of the things I learned about Nuremberg are quite interesting since it seems the city is known for a lot of “firsts”. It was here where the first clarinet, pocket watch, lathe and pencil factory were created. The first railway in Germany was built here. Additionally, the Holy Spirit Hospital was the storage depot for symbols of the Holy Roman Empire from 1424 to 1706. It is a photographer’s dream to be able to take pictures of the river, its buildings hugging the river banks, and the surrounding area.

Romantic background for a perfect picture from Museumsbrücke (Museum Bridge) which is very nice too. This special building next to River Pegnitz together with some trees and various geese wandering around, create the atmosphere for good shootings! Heilig-Geist-Spital was built in 1332-39 as a hospital together with a church. It was the imperial city's largest institution for disabled and sick people, but not with infection diseases. It's known also for the storage of imperial regalia from 1424 - 1796. During WWII the Holy Spirit Church was destoyed and was reconstructed by Julius Lincke (1951-1953). The bay window and the pointed tower were also rebuilt. Today it's a retirement home. There is a restaurant with the same name a little further.

This is a great spot for a photo. The old hospital has been here since medieval times and it's a very pretty location. If you have time revisit at night as it's lit up and again just a pretty spot to visit
