The truly magnificent Golden Hall on the third floor of the Augsburg Rathaus is a UNESCO gem that must be seen. There is a small exhibition on the easily accessible ground floor. Anyone who wants to visit the hall buys a ticket (2.5 euros) at the machine and can go up by stairs or elevator.

Augsbourg Town Hall is a magnificent renaissance edifice built under the city master architect Elias Holl's design in the second decade of the seventeenth century. The building has a striking very tall façade. The central vertical section thereof is topped by an elegant triangular pediment. Over each side section there is a tower ending with a bulbous dome. These side sections are higher than the central one The sight of that façade is really spectacular.
The main portal bears the inscription: “publico consilio / publlicae saluti / MDCXX”. It's very satisfying to find on the eastern façade the relief originated in the former gothic City Hall: two wild men keep the symbol of the city of Augsburg, to wit the pine corn
Inside, the groundfloor is nice. It's a vast hall whose ceiling is white painted. It includes several semicircle arches supported by roughly square red marble columns with doric inspiration capitals.
At any rate, the most impressive part of the building interior is the Golden Hall. Everything in that hall is marvellous; the golden door frames, the golden ceiling elaborate decoration, the frescoes on the walls, the other paintings decorating the hall, and so on. The design of the pictorial program in the Golden Hall is based on two main parameters: the “Imperial Concept” and the “Morality Concept”. The pictorial program was conceived by Matthäus Rader, while Peter Candid did the drawings, and an Ausburg painter named Matthias Kager executed the interior lay out and the paintings.
Unfortunately, the original works of the Hall were destroyed during the Second World War, on the occasion of the ravaging bombardment of February 1944. The town hall was then completely pulled down to its exterior walls. Nearly everything had to be rebuilt and therefore newly painted. In this respect the ten panels with grotesque ornamentation were made by the Augsburg painter Hermenegild Peiker. The large central oval painting represents “Sapientia”. The legend on the band reading “PER ME REGES REGNANT” draws the attention to the fact that the wisdom ought to be the most important quality of rulers.
There are some Golden Hall side rooms which are also very well decorated and recovered with ornamented wood in most parts of their walls and ceilings. One of these rooms contains tactile facilities for blind people. In it bronze casts of important artifacts and works of art can be touched. In this way, the mentioned disabled people can travel through two thousand years of Augsburg history.
When one is in that Golden Hall he may have the feeling of having been transported to a colourful and magical world. Everything is grandiose, and some paintings can be also delightful, such as the little cherubim with the floral garlands on the trompe l'oeil window frames. The visit to that hall shouldn't therefore be missed when one goes to Augsburg.

The Augsburg Town Hall including the Golden Hall and the Prince's Room is certainly one of the most famous sights of Augsburg. The ground floor can be viewed free of charge, the Golden Hall costs 2.5€ admission and is accessible from 10:00 to 18:00. The Golden Hall lives up to its name and we found the admission definitely well invested and would recommend a visit.

It seems to be one of the standard tourist attractions in Augsburg. It's true that the halls are gorgeous, but they were lost in the war and rebuilt. So there's a question mark over its historical value. The Schaezler Palace was not damaged in the war, so I recommend the halls and paintings there.

Augsburg is Elias Holl's city and he has definitely created a monument to himself with this town hall! The Golden Hall is the most impressive room in the building and can compete with the halls of many castles. Anyone who visits the city should definitely take a look inside and be enchanted by the splendor.

Built in 1615 it is considered one of the Renaissance masterpieces of Germany. 57 meters high, together with the Perlach Tower is now the symbol of the city with its famous towers with onion domes (1618) strongly desired by architect Elias Holl. Image of the square definitely scenic

Beautiful building seat of the municipality located on the square where the Christmas market takes place in December. Peculiarity: during Advent, singers and musicians dressed as angels appear at certain times. Very pretty.

The town hall with the neighboring Perlachturm is one of Augsburg's landmarks.
The seven-storey Renaissance building was built in the 17th century and damaged in the Second World War, especially the showpiece of the interior , the "Golden Hall" was completely destroyed. Since the hall is currently being refurbished, it cannot be visited.
Also the Perlachturm, which needs renovation and has been closed for years.

City to see, clean and very quiet, to fully enjoy the enormous green spaces. The beer gardens are excellent, they can be found almost everywhere, a very mild social environment and no problem wandering around at night. Worth visiting is the zoo and the market in the city, and if you come in the summer why not take a dip in the river!! Family-friendly city.
