Although it was lightly raining that didnt stop us from a 30 minute climb to the fortress, up many stairs, a tunnel and a good walking path, through grape vines, that seem to just sit there on the side of very steep hills. It is free admission and once you get to the top you can do a tour, or... More

The initial climb up to the fortress is very steep but considering there is free entrance to the castle the struggle is well worth it. The fortress is badly signposted so the best thing to do is to take your time and enjoy the whole castle but no doubt the best view is from the balcony which provides amazing views... More

A fabulous walk through the park and gardens lead us up here. From the terrace are some great views of the city. There is lots of renovation work going on, so many areas have restricted access. The flower gardens weren't even planted yet. We could barely visit anything, so I'm not sure why they are charging a fee right now.... More

Quite a walk up from the old town but it is a pleasant stroll and well worth the effort. The views and photo opportunities at the top are spectacular. It will take about 30 minutes and you can also visit the nearby Marienkirche (Church of Our Lady) dating back to 706 AD.

I didn't love Würzburg immediately. But that magical moment when I hiked up to Marienburg Fortress and see the cityscape for the first time, with dozens of spires piercing through the sky, I was instantly floored. The fortress itself isn't too shabby and it's good for a nice 2-hour walk. Very pretty and absolutely my #1 favorite place in Würzburg.

It was a vigorous walk from downtown Wurzberg but well worth it for the architecture and the views of the city.

It is a steepish climb up from the town to the fortress but very rewarding. I was doing a short language course and went with classmates. The views as you go into the fortress and looking down across the town are grand. Würzburg was well and truly turned into rubble at the end of WW2 and was rebuilt afterwards using... More

This fortress, or "Festung", is an amazing place of extreme beauty and historical significance. I lived in the Würzburg area for nearly four years, spent a lot of time here, and took hundreds of photos of this place, getting some great shots at night from the Old Saint's Bridge. Here's what I've done, and would recommend to anyone: - Tour... More
