To the Capuchin Monastery on the Nikolausberg leads a staircase with 265 steps, which, seen at half hight from the banks of the Main rivers built from 1761 to 1799 as the way of the cross. This way of the cross is the largest of its kind in Germany. It is laid out in the form of paved terraces on which large plane trees provide shade. This is especially important in these days when the sun makes 32 degrees in the shadow. A symmetrical stairway leads from one terrace to the next higher one. The ensemble of church and stations of the cross, embedded in the Weinberg landscape, is considered significant gem of the late Baroque. Warning: Don't run up if you do not have a good condition, especially with these temperatures we have in the moment here in Wurzburg.

There are some great walks around Würzburg and the Stationsweg leading up to the "Cappele" and steps leading up to it are essential to a visit. The walk is not as long as to the fortress, but the views are equally good from here. There are a series of steps that have staues depicting the stations of the cross between them. Grab a map, and enjoy the walk!

The calvary (way of the cross or in Latin: Via Dolorosa) leads over 256 steps to pilgrimage church “Mariä Heimsuchung”. November 2000 the Church administration Käppele took the decision to remediation of the calvary, built between 1761-1799 (Peter & Simon Wagner): stations of the cross and stairs remediation costs: 4.4 million euros! (October 2002 to October 2006). October 2002 started with the establishment of the construction site since the “Stationsweg” until then was not accessible for vehicles, so a construction road had to be made to transfer rubble and dug up Earth down and building materials to its individual levels. Spring 2003 construction workers, bricklayers and other craftsmen started with its actual remediation. The stairs (until then consisting of Earth and filling material) had become unstable due to water erosion and frost damage, roots of Platanus oppressed steps and their basic: at present the steps lay on a solid concrete foundation, as well as its railings have a firm grip again. Trusses of the stations were renovated and treated for wood rot, its roofs covered again with slate. Limestone pedestal, stone parts of corner pilasters and curved framework improved or partly-replaced by new components, semi-circular sidewalks of the chapels straightened, baluster panels renovated, trellis de-rusted, missing parts added and refreshed, interior and exterior plaster renewed and painted. The 77 statues had varying damage: missing or vulnerable parts were renewed, the floor in all stations removed and replaced by new sandstone tiles, Station I was equipped with a lime mortar floor. Unforeseen was the heavy damage to the walls: these had to be more extensively cleaned and plastered than formerly supposed. Multiple unstable Platanus had to be felled, in the old pavement where this problem occurred large plant holes for new Platanus had to be made thus causing different shield walls to collapse: on those spots these walls had to be demolished, reconstructed and equipped with new limestone. Finally, the drainage system had to be renewed or restored at various levels, whereby many Platanus stood in its way so these were again cost pushing.
