As part of our river cruise, we had a group wine tasting. It was one of the best wine tastings I have attended because the wine maker talked briefly to us about the family history and each of the four award wining wines. The bonus was a small snack included.

My wife booked this as a treat for me as I am very keen on the Franconian region in terms of wine. The UK doesn't seem to stock any wine from this region and it is a shame as this region is a genuine hidden gem. We were greeted at the entrance to the cellar and descended the stairs into a part of the cellar where we were given a welcome drink of a lovely rosé Sekt (German sparkling wine). There was a lovely presentation by one of the curators who explained some of the history of the wine region and the cellar in general. We then walked to another part of the cellar where we were seated at long benches for the main wine tasting. We were treat to a further 6 wines which were all very unique and all were an excellent standard. The curator gave a brief and informative overview of each of the wines as they were served. I can recommend this tour/wine tasting to anyone who visits Würzburg and has the time. Visitors from the U.K. I promise you, you don't know German wine until you try wines from this region and this tour is a must!

We were part of a small group tour (5 plus our tour guide), so pretty much had our cellar host to ourselves. The cellar is well below ground level and is old. The place is very dim, lit by candles- an historic touch from when they used them to monitor build up of carbon dioxide. Some of the wine casks (not used) pre-date the 30 Years War (1600's). One section was apparently burnt out during WW2, but has new casks that are commissioned by business and families. Almost all of the oval casks have carvings on the front. We tasted several of the wines and enjoyed most of them. Cellar door sales were possible & prices were reasonable.

If you can book this wine tasting, you will love it. It is not so much the wine, but the atmostphere. You go down into a cellar, which is lit by hundreds of candles. After walking through the cellars, you finally reach a room where you sit and sample a few wines. Thw walk through the cellars, which is memorable, and the atmosphere in which you sample the wines is just a highlight of the trip. Do not miss this.
