- Little Drummer Boy6 contributionsCycle the runway! We entered the park from the templehof station entrance. About 50 meters inside the entrance there are some shipping containers where we hired a couple of 2 seater electric assisted bikes. our Boys are 7 and 10, they loved exploring the park and getting to sit on the back whilst mum and dad did all the work, zooming up and down the runway for an hour. 2 assisted bikes 50 Euros, It was a good workout and a great way to see the park. We followed this with a look around the museum, a really great day out.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 March 2024
- Keiko TTokyo, Japan7 contributionsUnique and refreshing experienceVisiting **Tempelhofer Feld** was a unique and refreshing experience during our time in Berlin. This former airport turned public park is unlike any other place I’ve been to. The sheer size of it is astounding—it’s one of the largest urban open spaces in the world, and you really feel that sense of openness as soon as you step onto the tarmac. Walking across the old runways, you get a real sense of the history of the place. Knowing that this space was once a bustling airport, and before that, a site with deep historical roots, gives it an atmosphere that’s both nostalgic and forward-looking. Now, it’s a place where locals and visitors alike come to relax, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. We saw people flying kites, cycling, skateboarding, and even windsurfing on land, which was something I’d never seen before! One of the things I loved most about Tempelhofer Feld was how diverse the activities were. There were community gardens, where people were growing everything from flowers to vegetables, and lots of open space where people were picnicking or just lying on the grass. The park has a very laid-back vibe, and it’s clear that it’s a place where Berliners come to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The old airport buildings add to the unique atmosphere. They stand as a reminder of the field’s past, and you can even explore parts of them on certain tours. The juxtaposition of these historic structures with the open, vibrant park is something that really sets Tempelhofer Feld apart. Spending a few hours here was a great way to unwind and experience a different side of Berlin. It’s a place where history and modern life blend together in a way that’s both peaceful and dynamic. If you’re looking for a place to relax, exercise, or just soak in some local culture, Tempelhofer Feld is definitely worth a visit. It’s not your typical tourist spot, but that’s exactly what makes it so special.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024
- Christian AGeorge Green, United Kingdom48 contributionsTempelhofer field no shocks or surprisesThere seems to be some confusion from my fellow reviewers so I wanted to help them out. Most fields are subject to the local weather unless inside a giant sports arena. Ok so if you’re looking at this I’m sure you’re aware it’s the sight of a former airfield for a former airport that is nearby. There’s lots you can engage in, you can rent a bike and cycle around the field, You could look at the wild life watch the hawks hunting in the grass. You can sit down on a bench and have a conversation with someone, you’ll be surprised what you can learn not only about them but about yourself too. If that fails there’s a bar where you can have a drink to drown your sorrows. If you’re interested in the history of the field there are some signs that give glimpses of the history, hopefully they’re still legible as Berlin love graffiti. There’s a museum for the airport building on the opposite side to the field it’s self and you can book a tour online for the main building.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

It is not a park but a disused airport with a runway and no trees, benches or cafes. Skaters and cyclists can practice riding straight ahead for two kilometers here. Close to the subway and S-Bahn, the city could build tens of thousands of apartments here and alleviate the rampant housing shortage in Berlin. Sensibly governed cities like Vienna would commission a non-profit housing cooperative here and not speculators. But Berlin is, as the Tagesspiegel once wrote, a joke. That's why a few people are allowed to have fun here and tens of thousands continue to pay high rents.

The Tempelhof airport's buildings are mostly off-limits, the size of the place is impressive, all deserted? Who knows, perhaps some space is being repurposed, or still in use by airport authorities. Parts of the airport are open for visiting during opening hours. However the park outside is usually open for visiting. Truly, the airfield is a gigantic open space with copious amounts of room to play, picnic, walk, cycle, anything. There were guys riding surfboards with wheels, surreal. The takeoff and landing strips lend themselves for cycling, of which there is a lot going on, watch out for the racers :) There seems to be plenty activity happening around the field and I can imagine it can get pretty interesting, good for a half day's exploration. Nice visit.

We had booked the English-speaking guided tour. It was a very educational and fascinating tour. The guide was very well informed and managed to keep everyone interested for the entire duration of the tour. It is a place with a very rich history that you probably didn't know much about. It is easy to reach by public transport. If you are interested in the history of Berlin, you should definitely not miss Tempelhof.

A few days in Berlin with my daughter. And then just an afternoon at Tempelhof. The sudden expanse, in the middle of the city, was amazing. We rented an electric scooter that allowed us to cross the runway, landing strip and taxiway. Beautiful! Many children were flying kites, others skateboarding or windsurfing on the track. There is room for all that. What was also nice is that it is a quiet recreational spot for Berliners. Not exploited by commerce.

Very boring. Two hours of monotonous frontal lessons (in English). For history buffs and school groups. Requires advance online booking of at least 3 days. In the entire tour, which includes unfinished corridors (a string of bricks and stairs), the baggage collection space and an internal basketball court, we saw only one plane outside and not even that interesting to take a photo. About halfway through, we fell asleep. Reading information on the internet is the exact same thing. As far as we're concerned, time wasted.

A curious place that few cities could have and that, given the alternative or anarchic nature of Berlin, only seems to have a place here.
An old airport that ceased operations in 2008 and serves as a recreation area for Berliners.
In any other city, it would have been devoured by urban speculation but here it has remained as is. And taking a bike ride around an old landing strip is really cool.
As they say, "for the enjoyment of the people."

Tempelhof Airport is full of history and since its closure the idea of turning it in to a park for me was an inspired one. It was very cool to walk the runway and see the imposing terminal building. Situated out of the city centre but 100% worth it and served by metro stations.

Coolest, and windyist place in whole Berlin. 4 million square meters at free and sporty disposal. A must see if you want to visit all Berlin historical landmarks.

I often end up here spontaneously and seriously overdressed for the warm weather. Have been looking for the "nudist section" but can not find it. Anyone that can provide guidance? Maybe a map-screenshot with an X or so. :)

The English tours are fully booked for the date we can go.. can you visit without a tour guide?
Written 10 February 2018
We visited without a tour guide. There are large information boards posted all around the site with pictures in many languages. We left there having had a great relaxing time without being rushed around sticking with a tour group. Take your time and allow a good few hours!!! If you are into exercising, don't forget your gear.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how I could windsurf/landsurf there?
Is there equipement for rent and where should I go to rent it?
Thx!
Written 18 April 2017
Hi, I don't think there is a equipment rental nearby, but there are some in Berlin anyway. Google Coronation Berlin Kiteshop, it's in Friedrichshain.
Transit to Tempelhof by public transport is about 30min.

Can anyone tell me if the bike hire places also have cycle helmets? Thank you.
Written 19 August 2015
Most of them do not I think. There are several bike rentals from small shops and none of them had. I think you might find it though if you go to one of the big ones.
Another tip I would have for you is to try to book something in advance. We probably went to like 4-5 places before we found a shop that had bikes available.
Good luck and have fun! ;)

Non saprei dirti di preciso la grandezza però considera che è un ex aereoporto tra le piste e gli spazzi occupati dagli edifici ci metti poco ad arrivare a quella grandezza.

Hi, there are different entrances, there is one near the shabby station Berlin-Templehof. Also there is one on Columbiadamm and also Oderstrasse. Pretty much entrances along all streets that line the outside of the park. Hope that helps!

I am hoping to go to the Lollapalooza festival in September. Never been to Berlin before. Can anyone advise me what the best airport is to use from UK and where the best place is to stay. Also, does public transport still run regularly on Sundays as that is the event day we plan to buy tickets for.
Written 5 July 2015
You can use either of the two airports, Schönefeldt or Tegel. Both have good and frequent public transport to the city. From Schönefeldt you can take the train, from Tegel there are buses.
To my knowledge, public transport also runs on Sundays, however it may be less frequent than on work-days.
Enjoy Berlin - it's a great city!
