About
Used as a commercial and military transport center before World War I, this famous town square, which was trapped in the no-man's-land next to the Berlin Wall during the Cold War, is currently under construction to become once again one of Berlin's chief commercial centers.

The Potsdamer sq was the most important and busiest sq of the pre WWII era Berlin. It's named after Potsdam, a very important city and capital of the Brandenburg state. During the WWII it was totally demolished with no single brick standing, and after the division of Berlin was on no mans land.
Just after the reunification massive construction began, so today it's a most modern sq in all Berlin - the only place in German capital you can find modern glass/steel skyscrapers. Some of its attractions include the Sony center with a huge movie theater, Mt. Fuji inspired modern tent like roof, Lego land for kids, as well modern dining options. It's also one of the main transport hubs serving the capital.

Potsdamer Platz is a square located about one kilometer of Brandenburg Gate to the south. It is home to one of Berlin’s main underground stations.
Before World War II, Potsdamer Platz was the heart of Berlin and one of the busiest squares in Europe. However, it was destroyed almost to the ground during World War II and then remained an abandoned land for decades.
The Berlin Wall divided the square in two and the border area between West and East Berlin was not rebuilt during the Cold War. Following German reunification, reconstruction of Potsdamer Platz and its surroundings began in 1994.
Today, Potsdamer Platz is filled with skyscrapers and imaginative buildings such as the Sony Center. The area has been designed by renowned architects and is considered a very important creation of modern architecture.

Visited Potsdamer Platz, and although all the other reviews are correct (business district, glass and steel, a bit soulless), there are things of interest which make it worthwhile. We booked to go up the ‘Panorama Punkt’ which is a very tall building with apparently the fastest lift in Europe! You get good views from the top over the city and a history of the Platz with photos and information. Although it can be windy up there, there is also a great cafe with excellent cake and coffee, if you need a break. Around the Platz, in between the tall buildings there is one of the few buildings that survived the war in this area. You’ll know it when u see it!
If you head down Potsdamer Platz Road, and take the first left ( Erna- Berger Straße), at the end you will see the last remaining sentry tower ( DDR- Wachturn) from WW2. All in all, would definitely recommend a visit.

A fabulous area to walk around with many shops, restaurants, bars and cafes - and a safe pedestrianised area. There is a busy intersection but there are many road crossings that can be used (really unusual as they show a little green figure wearing a cap - there is a statue of this person in a Park area). There is a display of parts of the Berlin Wall with some very interesting background of the erection and demolishion of the Wall. In the Sony centre the ceiling changes colour - the ceiling is similar to a large circus tent! This area is a short walk from the Brandenburg Gate and is definitely worth a visit. The restaurants are reasonably priced and staff in any establishment I visited were really friendly.

Not a glimpse of the former glamor of this place. While it was the center of Berlin and a busy place in the 1920s, it is a standard accumulation of glass, steel and concrete. Like everywhere else in the world. Even 3rd world countries have more exciting places.

A lot of effort to create a business district from what was basically unused land.
If you like lots of glass & steel modern buildings, you will be happy. Some nice modern restaurants here but generally a bit soulless.

We stopped here during our day tour, for lunch. There is a mall and several restaurants, though probably overpriced and touristy (we had a good meal at Haus der 100 Biere). We could take photos at the pieces of the remaining Berlin Wall, and look at the former ghost metro station. We went here as part of "Alla Tours" all day tour of Berlin from our cruise ship's one day stop in Warnemunde port.

There's nothing to see there. A lot of traffic, smog, steel, concrete and asphalt. There are some wall segments, but nothing remarkable. Tere are some palaces made by a pair of archistars, But it's only a fade to gray. Do not go there.

Is the location for Hyatt better compared to Hilton if we intend to do sightseeing/shopping and dining in Berlin?
Written 29 November 2015
While not answering your question directly I can say we stayed right near Check Point Charlie and really liked that location. Personally I don't think you need that class of accommodation in the very modern city of Berlin.
