I did not connect with the plot, and did not understand most of what was said during the show, although there was a nice try to say it in German and English. The acrobatic performances were superb and also most of the dances. The stage was very unique with many changes. The clothes were a bit too revealing for my girls, and a bit too long for kids. Our seats had a good value for money. Will not see again, but still recommend for a one time nice evening.

Thank you for your positive review and your visit to the Friedrichstadt-Palast. While we recommend the show for children aged 8 and over, parents of course know best whether it is suitable for their kids or not. We’ve been putting on revue shows since the 1920s and a certain amount of sexiness is simply a part of the genre. I’m glad we were able to reach you with the texts in English, even if you weren’t able to follow every detail. We ensure that all relevant elements of the story are offered in both German and English. All key information is shared in both languages, though not always simultaneously. Since the song lyrics are not essential to be able to understand the Grand Show as such, but rather help to emphasise the mood, we made the conscious decision to take a multilingual approach. Staying in Berlin for a few days, we followed the advice of every city guide and booked seats for the show. Everything looked great when we came in : nice personnel, superb building, felt like going at the Opera. Getting to our seats, we discovered the huge scene and floorplan. We were both very excited for the show to start.

Then it started and we did not really understand what was happening. Lots of flashy effects, dancers everywhere, but no sense of direction. The show is supposed to be accessible for people not speaking German but this is not true : half of the story is told in German (but hey, we're in Germany so it makes sense, just be aware of it).

So, the show continues and it does not get better, singing is okay ish, dancing is sometimes great (beautiful duo of women dancing in a minimalist setting) until it's not ('Savage' like people coming to attack them for no reason).

And then, just before the halftime break, 5 long minutes of painful French cancan... Another review complained about the racial and sexiste issues and I can't agree more. Yes things can be sexy, if it has a purpose. Here it was just cheap display of body. I'm not a prude, I went to other shows who displays sexiness and enjoyed it. In this case it felt like late night new year's eve shows like Lido or Crazy Horse.

We left quickly at the break, we could not bear another hour of this.

Now, people seem to enjoy it so we are probably the outliers, but if you like things that are well thought, classy and do not feel like a school show with a ton of budget, go see something else.

Thanks for your visit. I’m very sorry we were unable to impress you. Our greatest wish would of course have been for you to also leave the Palast with a smile on your face. The production team, costume department and choreographers put a lot of thought into all aspects of our production. Ultimately, our goal is always to put on a great show: vibrant, varied, entertaining – in all of the elements presented, namely costumes, music, story and dance. How individuals receive these elements is undoubtedly a matter of taste though. While we try very hard to find the perfect mix for all guests, with an audience of almost 2,000 at every performance, meeting the tastes of each and every guest is virtually impossible. Of course we also play with sexiness and eroticism – we are a revue show after all! Sexiness has been a part of the revue art form since the Golden Twenties, as has the body culture of beautiful women and men. Saying that, there was actually far more nudity on theatre stages in the 1920s than there is today, 100 years later! We do not show any pornographic elements however. What we show is sexy in parts, but by no means crude. As already mentioned, how individuals receive these scenes is entirely a matter of taste; you like it or you don’t – and either is perfectly fine! It’s a pity we didn’t meet your taste this time round. Thanks for reading this. Dr. Berndt Schmidt General Director

I watched the show three times already and will definitely come back - the overall experience including everyone's performance (the amazing artists as well as the friendly staff on to the brilliant concept of a certified air condition) is just overwhelming. I ❤️ ARISE!

Booked tickets for Sunday Matinee on our weekend in Berlin. On a rainy day what could be better. However when we received our tickets they were for a show in January 2020. I called the theatre and spoke to Mike but he took no responsibility for the mistake and instead blamed a colleague . Unfortunately there wasn’t two seats together in our price range. Very poor response by the theatre, Definitely no stars for problem solving.

I`m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience booking tickets with us. Unfortunately your booking attempt online could not be completed successfully and the preferred seats were sold afterwards to another costumer – therefore these seats could not be offered anymore. The fact that only single seats were available is due to the fact that because of the Covid19-restrictions we had to block a limited number of seats until recently. Since this regulation was lifted, those seats (mostly single seats) have been released again. Adjacent seats were sold out in the price category you’d tried to book (also in higher categories by the way) and therefore only single seats could be offered – I am very sorry that there was no possibility for you to visit the Palast, but when there are no adjacent seats available, it is hard to offer any different solution. Of course, I do not want to contradict your criticism with what I have said – I really understand the situation and I am very sorry about that – but I just wanted to show a different point of view. Yesterday we went to Arise - Grand Show FriedrichsPalace. It was a big shock and disappointment! Advertised as international entertainment on the biggest theatrical stage of the world….. the story is that of a white man; artist/photographer who disrespects time( back man) and in doing so looses his muse (black „topless“ woman). He gets super depressed- eventually makes a deal with time; his Muse returns and so is his inspiration. When he seemingly no longer needs her- she magically disappears and he bathes himself in his own glory and light. Love wins over time- the program said; but surely the selfglofication fears and weird perverted Phantasies of the white man have nothing to do with real love. Also the show is supposedly suitable for children from age 8. But it is full of sexualised movements. And the kind of blond ponytail white ladies with high heels and legs all out…. And 1 Alibi black women Danceress- also with blond ponytail. Painful. Code Diversity in Cultural institution is a European Standard and this show definitely fails on all levels!i regretted spending every cent of the 80-90 euro per ticket per person!

Thank you for your review. Honestly, for a long time I didn't know how to respond to your criticism. I really couldn’t believe your comments and found them rude at some points. I readily accept different points of views, though, especially in matters of taste where there is ‘just taste’ and no right or wrong taste. The Palast is perhaps the most diverse theatre in Germany. We have more than 26 nations and mother tongues alone in our ballet company. We welcome all religions and atheists, all genders, all sexual orientations, colleagues with and without disabilities, all skin colours. A sign above our entrance doors reads “Respect Each Other”. We have four soloists in ARISE (playing the roles of Cameron, his muse, Light, and Time). We’re in Germany and on many nights, three of these four leading roles are played by artists of colour. And yet you call us racist... Generally, people travel to broaden their horizons. When you come to a different country, it’s a matter of respect to expect and accept different cultures. When you call our programme ‘sexist’, I can only respond: Welcome to Berlin! A certain kind of sexiness in show entertainment has been part of our culture since the Golden Twenties (a wild time that ended with the start of the Nazis dictatorship of 1933–1945). I don’t find what we’re doing at all sexist. While I accept your taste and views, you should accept too that there are others around the globe. And if you take a look at all the other reviews, you’ll notice that your review is in many ways also one of a kind. Wishing you all the best. Dr. Berndt Schmidt General Director
