Neighbourhood: Charlottenburg
Breathe in Berlin’s royal past while walking through the gardens of beautiful Charlottenburg Palace, which lends its name to this well-heeled neighbourhood. Here you'll find some of the oldest homes in the city: upper-class apartment buildings with ornate facades and marble-floored foyers line the cobblestone streets. Stroll by sophisticated restaurants, through little parks, or around Lake Lietzensee. Window shop down Kurfürstendamm, the most renowned high-end shopping street in Berlin, where you can find all the big designer names. In the evening, visit one of the old theatres close by Zoo Station which were nightlife hot spots in the 1920s, or dine in one of the many international restaurants around Savignyplatz before heading to other parts of town for a night out.

The market was ok but mainly food, as with all the markets in Berlin this year. The palace was lit up with lights and a light projector on the front that changed images which was excellent. There was also a band playing which added to the atmosphere.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023

We went round the small Christmas market in the entrance area - this was not as good as Bebelplatz so probably best to make sure that the Palace is open before visiting the market. The nearby museums were all also closed on a Monday.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 December 2023

- Caroline LPLondon, United Kingdom1,692 contributionsAmazing renovationsWhat a amazing palace, it had multiple original features and where needed due to the war numerous renovations to restore the rooms where possible. It had lots of portraits even one of Queen Victoria. It wasn’t overly busy probably because it was January, so you could take your time to really view the elegance and style of this palace. We saw the gardens from the palace itself but didn’t explore outside as it was freezing cold, but if we visit Berlin in the summer months we will come back to take a look. We found it was really easy to get to and travelled from Potzdamer Platz on the U2 to Sophie Charlotte Platz and walked down Schrobstabe. Definitely a must see if visiting Berlin.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 January 2024
- FilipPodgorica Municipality, Montenegro197 contributionsVery good museum! An excellent museum with many works of art. You can buy the ticket on the spot and there are no crowds. A real thing to visit on a rainy day. The only complaint is that the facts about the pictures, for example, are not written under the picture itself, but on the board at the entrance to that room, so it's a bit confusing to navigate.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 March 2024
- Thame TravellerThame, United Kingdom143 contributionsSuperb Palace of CharlottenburgWell worth visiting, splendid palace in Charlottenburg intended as a Summer home for Sophie Charlotte, Elector Friedrich III’s wife. Dates from 1695 and resplendent New Wing and the Old Palace. Guides were mostly very helpful and each room has a summary of the contents and former use. The audio guide downloadable to one’s phone is good, if a little long winded. The odd thing is that the external signage is poor to non-existent, I only found the Old Palace after following the Shop sign which led to another front courtyard! There is no cafe in the Palace or grounds and one can easily spend 3 to 4 hours going round, so unless you head off over the road to find somewhere in the town, I would recommend taking some food and drink to have in the lovely grounds by the river Spree.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 March 2024
- Andrew B25 contributionsReally enjoyable visitI thoroughly recommend visiting this palace. We had read a number of reviews before we visited, with one reviewer advising that they had visited all rooms within 45 mins, while another advised their visit had taken half a day! We spent nearly 3 hours on site and all really enjoyed it. Yes a lot of the furniture has been relocated from a different palace and rooms have been rebuilt following WWII, however this didn't take away from the grandeur of the palace. The staff were very helpful during our visit and we found the commentary (now on an app downloadable to mobile phones) very informative. There were some exhibits that we spent less time with (silver and porcelain) but this was personal choice.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024
- WendyMuch Wenlock, United Kingdom57 contributionsHuge Palace with lots to see.We spent 4+ hours here. There is so much to see. We were lucky that despite it being a Saturday, it was relatively quiet. We pre-booked our tickets and downloaded the tour on our mobiles. It's very interesting and full of history and artifacts. The Palace was badly damaged in 1943 during the Second World War and has been sympathetically restored. The huge gardens are free to enter for all and a lovely place to walk around. I viewed the older central palace, the new wing to its level, and the pavilion to the east of it, a smaller building, only open to guided tours, which houses several paintings by one of my favourite artists, Caspar David Friedrich. All in all, three hours well spent.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 May 2024
- sheepygold5,478 contributionsSome highlights but a bit neglected. Do the old palace first. Allow a whole day to visit everything. The website is not very helpful. It tells you to buy a timed ticket but doesn't tell you whether that is for the old or new palace. In reality the ticket time doesn't matter at all. I would suggest doing the old palace first allowing 2 hours, then the new palace for an hour. If you want to see the Pavilion you must get a timed ticket as it is by a guided tour in German although there is written information along the way in English. This takes about 40 minutes and is basically a collection of paintings. The mausoleum is well worth a visit if you have time. Allow a half an hour at least to wander round the gardens. We didn't get to the Belvedere and the member of staff I asked didn't know if it was open. There isn't a guidebook to buy which is a shame but there is a lot of information in English. The cafe isn't open on a Tuesday but there are a number of places open across the road from the Pavilion. There are some undoubted highlights here especially in the old palace but overall it has an air of neglect.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2024

The 1 star is for the lovely man on the bag check in area and the delightful lady in the gift shop. Unfortunately I have to echo what some other visitors have said.
We visited the palace on Wednesday just gone (8th June) and we were made to feel so uncomfortable we just left within 5 minutes.
We arrived literally minutes after finding out a man had driven into crowds in central Berlin, where we were meant to be that afternoon, so we’re feeling a little shocked.
We were told we had to leave the buggy with our rucksack (which was full of our 21 month olds things), fine, but this was never expressed on the website, the bag we could live without but the buggy would have been helpful for our little boy to sit in as we went around. I grabbed his drink out of his rucksack (it was 23 degrees outside) and his reins. We entered into the ‘self guided tour’ downstairs and out little boy was quite happily walking on his reins and was more interested in looking out of the windows than anything else in the rooms. Immediately a member of staff put her eyes on us and literally followed us from one room into another. This member of staff then disappeared and came back with an older member of staff who then also proceeded to star at us, point and were chatting in German, which I couldn’t hear, but I did hear the word ‘baby’ a few times. We were made to feel so uncomfortable that we decided to leave…I’ve never been made to feel this horrible before, and for what ? Nothing ! There were other visitors with young children and nothing was said to to them or they weren’t followed, even though I saw their children rubbing their hands all over very old, palace items/rugs/walls. We kept walking, rushing through until we got back to the bag drop and left. I think the man on the bag drop felt sorry for us as he asked us if Mason was allowed a sweet and he gave him a sweet from his drawer, which was so lovely and kind. We then went to the gift shop, where I bought the guide I could read at home and then walked around the gardens (which was free).
I regret paying 17 euros each for myself and my partner when we never got to enjoy the experience at all.
So be warned if you are going with children, they make you feel like criminals.

Size is the most fascinating thing about this palace. Especially when you visit the lovely garden area (free of charge).
As for the inside itself, it felt like a tourist trap. Having been to the Munich Residence, this was much more toned down and simple in terms of display.
Also not happy with the ticket pricing. We were charged €17 each to view the old wing, the new wing, and the pavilion. Certainly this certainly has more worth considering each wing already costs €12 (if I remember correctly), and the pavillion, another few bucks extra (can't remember price but it was below €10). Honestly, the pavillion itself isn't worth viewing at all.
Considering that I was with my husband, I inquired about the family rate that I saw on their website. The family rate was €25 for 2 adults and up to 4 kids. Unfortunately, we were advised that we were not eligible for that because we didn't have kids. What a slap to your face? What if we were a couple who couldn't have kids due to some reason out of our control? So a family of 6 can pay €25 entry but as a married couple who didn't have kids we had to pay a total of €34? Nonsense. They should have at least had a rate in between the solo and the family, or raised the family rate a bit higher as it totally felt offensive.

Others have written in detail about the Palace complex and there is no need for me to write the same things.
I would simply say that once you have done the main sites in the city centre, hop on a bus and come here - it is very easy to do so (eg direct buses from Zoo Station).
The Palace is covid-secure, so no worries there, and the (included) audio guide is excellent, and you can listen to as much or as little as you want.

The Charlottenburg palace is situated in the far western part of Berlin. Although, it's not in the prime tourist area, it can be easily combined with other attractions close by in order not to come only for it. These include the Olympiastadium, Gleiss 17 platform and Wannsee. If visiting all of the above count on a full day. The palace is easy accessible by U or S bahn in around 30 min from central Berlin.
The Baroque palace was built at the end of 17 c for Sophie Charlotte, king Friedrich's wife. It's pretty big with magnificent gardens at back. The rooms we toured are among the more lavish I saw.
The only backdraw was a pretty steep entry fee of 12 Euros

The Charlottenburg Palace is, in my opinion, one of the top main attractions in Berlin. However, the visitation is not highly frequented so it is very nice and not stressful to visit this place. You can visit it independently from the weather or the age. Everybody can see something new and have fun. There is also a restaurant and a location where you can have a big party like a wedding or a prom. This place is very popular for such events.
It is easy to reach by public transport, with the train and there is a bus station in front of the palace, there is also a large parking lot.
It was build in the 17th century and the facade was completely repainted about two or three years ago. Inside the palace is a museum with changing exhibitions.
Every year, there is a large Christmas market in front of the palace and the palace is beautifully illuminated. Behind the palace is a big garden which is absolutely lovely. There are a small pond and a lot of trails where you can walk around. You also can ride a bicycle through the garden or have a small picnic with some friends or do sports in a group. Often there are groups of people doing yoga. There are several sheep in the meadow so the lawn does not have to be mowed. This is very environmentally friendly and also a small attraction

A beautiful place inside and out.
Professionally restored parts of exhibits and rooms are returning this Palace to former glory.
From the entrance, through the exhibit rooms to Palace gardens, it breathes history from every crevice.
Headphone tour is available in several languages with a photographer fee (which is affordable and convenient).
The most amazing room was the Porcelain Room which has an impressive porcelain collection.
The inner Cathedral is breathtakingly stunning.
Palace gardens and grounds are epitome of well kept and eco friendly.
If you visit in winter, skating on tje frozen water is a must do.
Gift and souvenir shop offer Berlin mementos, from East-West postcards,Berlin Wall fragments to Palace memorabilia.
Amazing place and a professional Berlin-like service.

Terrible experience, as an avid and experienced traveller, visited more than 70 countries and countless attractions, this is the first time I have encountered such unprofessional, unfriendly and unhelpful staff. We were told that our vaccination certificates were not recognised despite using it to enter into Germany, restaurants and many other attractions. The tall dark hair lady told me to go to the pharmacy to have it converted. The pharmacist refused stating no such service (turned out she was wrong though). I returned back and asked the tall dark hair lady to call and explain to the pharmacist what I need because it might be due to a language barrier. The tall dark hair lady refused, ordered me to leave the premises and behaved like she was ready to call the guard upon me when I was just a clueless tourist trying to enter the museum. Worst experience ever. Will not recommend anyone to visit unless you want a lady threatening your

Lucky her, my daughter lives right next door to this magnificent buiding so the family are able to enjoy regular strolls in the amazing gardens! well worth a visit, we had a look around the older part of the palace interior too but there is so much to see it needs several hours to properly be able to view all the rooms open to the public. The decor and ornaments in the rooms we got to see are stunninjgly ornate and opulent. The gardens are huge and immaculately kept . This was my first and regretfully fleeting visit to Berlin so I plan to return to see much more of this green and verdant city as soon as I am able!

we spent several hours enjoying the artwork, artifacts and beautifully decorated rooms in the old and the new palace. There are gardens too which would be lovely to walk around during the warmer months. Booking on line in advance will save you €5 per ticket; however we bought a combined ticket at the palace for €19 which we still felt was very good value. Having the headset was helpful as it provided lots of interesting information on the house and family history. Would recommend

Charlottenburg Palace is considered one of Berlin's main attractions. Built at the end of the 17th century, as a royal summer residence in baroque style, and was expanded during the 18th century. Parts of the interior are open to visitors like the porcelain cabinet and the bedchamber of King Frederick .
The highlight of the palace is the beautiful garden.
55 herctares (free to enter) are giving a lot of space to locals and visitors to walk along Spree River and discover a number of old buildings hidden among the plentiful trees.
Allow 2-3 hours to explore it.
