Excellent tour with Arja... Very knowledgable guide. Great to have a walking tour with a local rather than an overseas student (as many other walking tour companies seem to use in European cities). We were given an excellent historical overview but also great tips and facts about the city as we walked around. A must do for new visitors to... More

Being a seasoned traveler I have done many walking tours around the world. But nothing compares to my tour with Arja in Berlin. It was a completely different experience having a local show me around compared to somebody who has just studied the country. Arja gave both historical facts and personal stories giving me a rich in depth sense of... More

My husband and I took the "Berlin Highlights Tour - Expanded Version" (offered by Tours by Locals) on September 28, 2013 and our tour guide, Roberto T. was terrific! His passion and enthusiasm, as well as his knowledge of the city was apparent. He met us at our hotel (at the designated time) and allowed us to use his tram... More

We had Arja as a guide and director for a series of cities including Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. She is not only an excellent guide but also a great tour director. Her knowledge of the places we visited was expansive and detailed. She conducts the tour with flexibility, humour and energy. She is also exceptionally good at... More

I greatly appreciated Caroline's tour, particularly the depth of knowledge she was able to share! Like walking around with an animated, entertaining encyclopedia of Berlin history.

I attended a tour by Berlin Locals as part of a conference event. First I was afraid walking around Berlin in still rather cold spring weather could turn out an exhausting entertainment, but that wasn't the case at all. The guide, Caroline, was charming and everything she said was based on what I consider an impressive body of historical knowledge.... More

Arja Jacob is a delight! She was our guide on a 6 day bus tour of Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. She has a passion for the history of Central Europe and enjoys sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with her clients. She is obviously intelligent and educated in her area. We were a rather diverse group and she... More

We had 4 days in Berlin over Easter and we wanted to make the most of our time there. My husband was nervous I'd spend 4 days dragging him around Museum Island so was desperate for an alternative. After reading reviews on here we chose Berlin Locals and were immediately impressed with our guide's (Arja) interest in catering the tour... More

I was recommended to contact Berlin Locals by a friend, as I was in Berlin with my parents and younger brother for a week. Arja was fantastic in making the places visited and information given relevant to both myself (in my 20s) and also my parents (in their 60s). Her level of information was amazing - she and my father... More

Staying in Schoneberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Schoneberg
In 1963, Schöneberg was the centre of the political west, inspiring John F. Kennedy to choose this area to famously announce, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Times may have changed, but modern-day Schöneberg still pays tribute to its historical legacies. Once the richest city outside of Berlin proper, the area's affluent past is still visible in ornate housing facades dating back to the Gründerzeit of the 19th century, while residents in fur coats walking their dogs or shopping in high-end KaDeWe continue the tradition with a modern flair. Schöneberg was also once the centre of the decadent and burlesque nightlife of the 1920s. It was here that Marlene Dietrich partied with Christopher Isherwood and the first gay bar in Germany was founded. Today, the gay community still revolves around Nollendorfplatz. The overground Ubahn station is even illuminated in rainbow colors, paying tribute to Schöneberg's progressive past.
