The Deutsches Historisches Museum (German Historical Museum) presents its exhibitions in the Pei building designed by the Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. The unique Baroque Zeughaus (armoury) on the avenue Unter den Linden is closed for necessary renovations and for the renewal of the Permanent Exhibition. The Museum is Germany’s national historical museum. Located in Berlin’s historic district of Mitte, it sees itself as a place of active communication and discussion of history.

The Museum's main permanent exits were closed (August 2021) but the web site still sold us two tickets. When we got there, we found out that all we could see was a an exhibit on the "Moderna" art exhibits that had been been in Germany since the late 50's. A few interesting facts to read about, very few actual art exhibits to see.

After paying admission to this museum, I was very disappointed that the two sections that were open, were just reading walkthroughs and exhibits were nearly non-existent. We learnt that the main section, probably the one you see in Trip Advisor’s photographs, was closed for refurbishment until 2026. Not all tourists have the privilege of being the guest of the UK tax payer as in London museums. Something I’m proud of in my country promoting the importance of education. I expected more, and still do, of the importance Germany places on education. The managers of this museum are not good ambassadors of this. They are willing to take money from people and give very little in return.

Bought a welcome pass which was a rip off as this mueseum is mainly closed and museum island museums closed or need booked 4 weeks in advance. Went into the museum and the woman was unhelpful. I have some German and asked if she spoke English. She said a little so I thought we could converse with mtual effort. I asked about the armour and she said part of the museum was closed. I asked if the armour was in the closed part and she threw down two leaflets about the small exhibits that were on and said " why don't you read these, they are in English" and shooed us away. 2 seconds later I had Google translated armour and asked the younger friendlier and more helpful man and he explained that the armoury exhibit was in the closed section. Nice young man but wasted journey for us

Not worth a detour at all . It gives a rather jaded picture of how Germany came together and since . The museum needs proper signalling and updated display approaches . It should be and it is not a permanent prestige exhibition .

Relevant exhibition, but it was experienced unexpectedly. The script on the wall was small and often did not hang near what it symbolized.
The man who sold the tickets gave little information, only answered the very specific one asked about. When you enter the museum you will encounter a lot of staff or guards(?) who do not greet and look at everything you do. I received a little friendly message from one of the staff that I was not allowed to wear my jacket. This one I had to wear or hang in a wardrobe. I was not allowed to wear my jacket. This information was uncertain for us, and the way the message was passed was unpleasant.
Would in no way visit this again.

I read the reviews and went there with my son with great inspiration. We were completely disappointed. Some magazines and pictures, photographs with events that took place in Germany in the twentieth century. There is no audio guide in Russian... In the cloakroom the woman spoke Russian, when they came out, she said that now it’s not interesting here (why not when we entered? 😒) There used to be a cool museum, but it was closed, the exhibits were taken out.... It’s a pity. A ticket with a Welkom Berlin card cost €5.5, children under 18 are free.

The Museum’s permanent collection is closed right now, but there is a fantastic exhibit called The Road Not Taken. The exhibit examines 14 key events in German history since 1848 in which some small event or decision could have changed what happened in a major way. For example, it says that if a particular bridge over the Rhine had been blown up by the retreating German Army after the Battle of the Bulge—the Wehrmacht wanted to do that but it failed to do so—that would likely have delayed the American advance long enough that the atom bomb would have been ready for use on Berlin rather than Hiroshima before Berlin fell. Similarly as to Hitler’s rise to power and other inflection points. I wished I’d allowed more time for it.

We went to the museum mainly (solely) to see the Richard Wagner exhibit. Sadly, it was not a very fulfilling visit. We learned almost nothing about Wagner—the person—or his friends and family. Mainly a lot of peripheral info about the uprising in Dresden and surrounds. Yes, it’s important to know about what influenced Wagner, but we came away not understanding a whit more about his music or his persona. Too bad. This was supposed to be a highlight for my Berlin visit.

There is a lot of history in Berlin and plenty of museums to visit.
We spent a happy 3 hours at the exhibition called basically “but what if…” It covered all of the major events that you would expect - world wars, Berlin war and back in time to 1850 - but didn’t just present the facts, it also made you think about what might have been. It was fascinating, thought provoking and well presented.
The final room had an interactive role-playing game set up on an iPad. You pick the person you want to play and work through different scenarios relating to the fall of the Berlin wall.
I strongly recommend this exhibition. It was interesting, educational and excellent value!

Most of the exhibition areas are closed for renovation however we came here as this is one of the few museums open on a Monday. Only one exhibition area about roads in history - important to note that the exhibits go back in time - a bit confusing to start with. Didn't really like the "games" room at the end. No English books for sale in the bookshop. You need to pay for entry to the exhibition.

There is generally a good explanation in German & English. I didn't feel the need for an audio guide. It depends how much in-house depth you want to go.

Free for under 18's otherwise 8 Euro's for those over. You can also buy a Berlin Pass from Tourist Information shops (Theres one by the Brandenburg Gate) This pass gives each holder (Two people would need to buy two passes Etc) discounts to major attractions and also cheap transport on Buses and Underground. The pass costs about 34 Euro's but it is worth it, and it comes with a 'free' guide book on Berlin.
