About
Millions of Germans lived in Communist East Germany for 40 years – so what was it like? Our permanent exhibition on “Everyday Life in the GDR” shows what East Germans’ lives were like in the 1970s and 1980s – at work, in public and in private. It shows how the Communist regime shaped everyday life, how people coped with the lack of things and the borders, and how they created free spaces for themselves. We present original objects in the individual themed rooms in the exhibition that then blend with everyday scenes. You can take a seat in a tavern, a living room or at a work bench, and find out more about leisure time and improvisation, housing construction and working life in Communist East Germany. Everyday objects are supported in the exhibition by historical documents, accounts by contemporary witnesses, and film material from the time, shedding light on everyday life in Communist East Germany from several different angles.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Prenzlauer Berg
No Berlin neighbourhood has undergone a greater change than Prenzlauer Berg. The artists and non-conformists that defined the district’s intriguing subculture in the 1980s and 90s have been replaced by a young, hip crowd that frequents the many cafes. Where there were once run-down houses in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, there are now designer shops. Beautiful old homes have been modernized and renovated, and on Sundays, thousands turn the park next to remnants of the wall into a playground for street artists, musicians, and flea market shoppers. This attracts young urban families who enjoy the balance of big city life and small-town comfort. Meanwhile, trendy, young, upper-class visitors from all over the world are attracted to the local high-end shops, cafés, and sophisticated bars and restaurants. The merits of this transformation are a favorite topic of debate around the city, but it makes for some of the best people-watching Berlin has to offer.

It has been a while that the wall came down and many people cannot imagine what it meant to be living in the former DDR. This museum shows various aspects of daily live back then. Some German knowledge is helpful, as most exhibits contain lettering.

We spent a good 2 hours in this museum and we were happily surprised by the quality of this free museum: the exhibition is exhaustive and very well organized. We learned a lot-even for my husband who is German. Bonus: if you go on Sunday, you can also enjoy the food market in the courtyard of the Brauerei.

Brilliant museum tucked away in the Kulturbrauerei, you may need to look at the map as you enter the area as there is a lot of businesses here. Free entry and absolutely full of fascinating displays, photos and items about living the in DDR, in which this building was a factory during that time. Also a seperate display of photos of German people living in a former “Communist model village”. I especially loved the Trabant tent. Nice shop with the cheapest prices of any where I went, get a mini Trabant model here for much less than anywhere else. Nice toilets too.

I found out about this by chance while visiting Tränenpalast and seeing an advertisement for it. It‘s a free museum about life in the DDR - like the one in city centre, but a bit off the beaten track and more focused on detail and education than entertainment. Highly recommend spending a few hours here, definitely worth the trip.

Really interesting insight into life in Easy Germany before the fall of the wall. It is situated in the Kulturbrauerei which is a stunning complex of buildings. The exhibition is a clever mix of viewing and listening making it an interactive experience.

Moderate size Museum focussed on life in the DDR in the 1970s and 1980s. Gave some interesting insights on how things were during that period. Exhibits are interesting and there is enough text in English so you can see what’s going on.

Very uneven experience. Some interesting content. But awful English signage. Text is extremely (and unnecessarily) small. Often poorly lit. Signs placed at odd angles. A stressful experience.

Small free museum showing life in East Germany. Located in an area near the Lucia Christmas market. Most information available in English and German. Interesting for a quick visit.

Fascinating, chilling, informative. If your knowledge of life behind the wall is limited to what you've seen in films and on the tv, come here and learn a whole lot more. There are strange and charming displays (a Trabi car with a built-in tent on the top for those freezing holidays somewhere else in the DDR), displays that make you angry (cabinets full of banned clothing, books, and records), and room recreations that bring it all to life vividly. Highly recommended, especially if you've just done the wall walk from Hauptbahnhof to Eberswalderstrasse (also highly recommended).

Museum has excellent exibits on life in the former DDR. Cold War enthusiasts will find the many displays very interesting. Located in the far back corner of the Kulturbrauerei complex. Elevators and HC accessible.
