I visited the Staatsoper company (they're still currently performing in the Schiller theater until the Staatsoper is completed with renovations) while visiting in December 2015. The performance of Don Giovanni was spectacular! So glad I got to see the same company my great-great grandfather used to enjoy when he was living in Berlin back in the 1800s.

Staatoper (Berlin State Opera) is an important German opera company that calls the venue by the same name on Unter den Linden in the Mitte district of Berlin its home. Presently, the building is under reconstruction works which are scheduled to take place until Autumn 2017. As such at this time, you can enjoy seeing the Neo-classical facade of the... More

I had the opportunity to take a tour of the opera, which is currently being reconstructed. It is a historical building, which hopefully will be as beautiful as it was before. I was impressed by the roof's decoration and that the traditional elements are mixed with the modern ones. I hope that I will be able to attend a performance... More

We were lucky to be under 33 years old and thus be able to buy great tickets for a Tosca performance for 10 euro's each! I highly recommend to dedicate an evening in Berlin to the Staats Opera. Even though today they are based in Schiller's Theatre due to the reconstruction of the main Opera Building in the very city... More

We were still so lucky, that we have been in the old Staatsoper - before they started to reconstruct. It is a wonderful opera house, and hopefully it will be after the works as beautiful as it was. Nowadays the play in the Schiller Theater - most probably this is the confusion in the reviews.

I had the distinct pleasure of being at the premiere of Deutsche Staatsoper production Steffani's "Amor Vien dal Destino" on April 23. It is one of the most impressive and enjoyable entertainments I have ever seen. The concept, staging, production, and costumes worked together with the virtuosity and commitment of Rene Jacobs, the Academy of Ancient Music of Berlin and... More

I attended the good Friday performance of Parsifal at the Staatsoper in the wonderful Schiller theatre The cast and especially the chorus were fantastic and sang the whole thing beautifully under the direction of Daniel Barenboim who controlled the whole evening both orchestra and stage with the most wonderful use of light and shade in Wagners music. Cast to point... More

The State Opera House or the Staatoper is a grand building built in the Classical style. It is one of the oldest buildings of Berlin as it was completed in 1743. It was designed lavishly by Knobelsdorf. It used to be the Court Opera House until a fire ruined it in 1843. The building was reconstructed immediately. Next destruction of... More

First of all, there was a guy selling a large variety of preztels (brezels) outside the opera house. I immediately bought a pepita covered one. Walking into the building the staff was lined up the center of the stairs with glasses of wine and water to take as you passed. We then proceeded to a lovely lounge area that was... More

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
