A beautiful interior it is worth a look around. The architecture is stunning, with a curved upper floor, impressively painted woodwork and massive organ. It is also a practising church too, so I recommend that you are observant and take a moment to be aware of any ceremonies taking place there before you visit. I did pay to visit the crypt and tower, but I honestly wouldn't recommend visiting the former.
The crypt has low ceilings and is generally void of anything of interest. There are some static display cases with some historical information about the church inside but this is very minimal. The crypt is also quite small. In my opinion it is not worth paying to see. The tower on the other hand is worth the small charge to go up via stairs or lift, with views less obstructed than on the viewing platform at the St. Nikolai memorial.
There is a small shop with information desk (rectangular modern building) behind the church where you can purchase the tickets. I spent about an hour here. I wouldn't say this is a must see on a first visit to Hamburg, but if you have the time, in the area or have a interest in religion this might be for you.

From the steeple you can get a great view of the city even on a not so nice day like when we visited in November. You can either take an elevator up and down or walk down the steep stairs. I recommend going up by elevator and coming down the stairs. The church is an important part of Hamburg history and also has a crypt in it which we did not visit. Also nearby are several historical neighborhoods worth visiting as well.

Amazing building. We started with a quick visit inside the church which is very beautiful with four different organs. Then we took the lift to the tower where you have a great 360 degrees view of the city. But the must to do is coming down from the top by the stairs. There are several stages with different information and details of the tower/church which you will miss if coming up and down through the lift. There is a fee of 6 € to go to the top of tower. Definitely recommended.

We visited the church after the observation deck but almost as an afterthought. We didn't go into the crypts sadly but the church was superb. It is relatively modern (just over a hundred years old) and the inside is bright and airy.
We spent about twenty minutes listening to the organ recitals and it was lovely to see a church that is actually in use, rather than being just a museum. The crypts were €6 or an extra €2 if you do the tower trip.
There was a lift to the top of the tower (luckily!) and once at the top you were able to walk around the whole circuit. On the day we visited it was very dull and grey so we didn't spend too long at the top.

The church had a very nice Baroque interior, a bit like a theatre really; like the Church of Our Lady in Dresden, but unique and better.
The tower does have great views, but I’m not a big fan of these; especially when we had seen similar views from the Philharmonic Concert building last night.
The crypt was very disappointing, with little to see really, and it was almost all in German. It is so easy to translate these days, so this was surprising. Some history of the fires and rebuilding was interesting though.
The worst part was that as we were nearing the end of the tour we realised there must have been an audio guide that we missed. We bought tickets online and saw nothing about this, and we were not offered it by either of the two attendants we spoke with. It would have made the exhibited far more worthwhile.
We felt that the website was unclear about tickets, opening times and costs.
It was underwhelming really, as we have seen many churches like this. If you haven’t, then the interior is definitely worth a look.

This large church dominates the skyline with its tall dark tower. The interior of the church is bright and airy with richly carved wood and gold accents. A visit up the tower requires a ticket that can be purchased at the visitor center next to the main church building. An elevator will take you to the top and a large viewing platform provides views all around the city.

Hamburg offers a wonderful series of organ concerts through the summer. The daily mini-recitals in churches are nice, but the evening series brings out the best in the instruments. While the gold and white of the interior catches the eye, it's the delight of the instruments on the ear which make this a good place to come and listen.
On my visit, the organist from the Dom in Cologne was featured. Samuel Barber's "Adagio op. 11" was particularly good.

Actually is not an old church ,the largest church of Hamburg and the most recognisable. The interior is exceptional due to the impressive 5 organs and the baroque design. The place inspire silent, peace and pray.Trere is a lift that you can go up to the top of the clock tower with stunning views over the city.
Worth a visit, one of the most popular attractions oh Hamburg.

For €10, you can got up to the viewing platform on the church tower/steeple and you can visit the crypt. It is a bit of a climb but there was a lift. I climbed the stairs stopping off at various levels to view exhibitions about the church's history. The whole experience is amazing and wasn't too busy even on a Saturday.

We sometimes hesitate with admission prices, is it really VALUE now? Here one should not hesitate - it is worth going up the tower. Ingenious fast ride up. And a view over TOTAL HAMBURG, which we don't get from elsewhere. After you've had plenty of time to look around, you go back down the stairs and experience many details and impressions, e.g. the clockwork, the bells, ... etc.
But also the actually sacral building must be visited. A beautiful baroque building, which embodies Hamburg, visible from far away. The balance between iconoclasm and baroque elements has been maintained in the church. A very pleasant sacred space, for which donations are requested.

Noi abbiamo fatto la City Card con cui siamo entrati, pagando un forfait per tutte le attrazioni turistiche, culturali e trasporti compresi. La cripta della Chiesa invece l'abbiamo pagata a parte pochi euro in più.

I’m currently at the church and wondering is there anywhere nearby that we can buy a love lock for the tower?! We are celebrating a 10 year anniversary and I’ve never done this before. Would love to leave one here in such a beautiful place so long as it’s allowed and causes no damage to the structure
Written 18 August 2019
The use of "love locks" is more "commonly seen" on a particular bridge in Paris... As this Historic church is heavily visited, I believe that you would have to "get permission" to do so... and, it is most probable (in my view) that it would not be "readily forthcoming!! I hope that this response to an interesting question, has been helpful.

What time do church services begin on Sundays?
I would like to attend an actual service.
Written 27 March 2016
I do not know exact timing, but the service is open at 9 AM - that is when I went there. Hope that helps.
