It may be that you can find shelter in the rain. The church always offers shelter and tranquility, which one can often wish in a big city on holiday.
Here is also a beautiful view of the very old church, which has also been on fire, but alive.

Saint Peter's Church was built by order of Pope Leo X and it has been a Protestant cathedral since the Reformation and its congregation forms part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. Unfortunately we were to early and it was closed. We will try next time to see it inside but from outside looks really grand.

St. Peter's Church is a formerly catholic cathedral that was converted to a Protestant cathedral after the Reformation. While not monumental in scale, it’s an interesting Gothic church for its use of red bricks, but otherwise very gothic niches with sculptures of saints, and typical gothic interiors. In some ways the interiors are typically protestant for it’s sparse decorations, the entrance into the church can be quite picturesque as you have to pass through triple arches which beautifully frames the high altar and the stained glass behind it.
To the right of the altar is also a painting with interesting depiction of Jacob’s Ladder. Not quite as beautiful as St. Michael’s, but worth a look nevertheless.

This church with the tallest observation point in Hamburg seems to get overlooked for the (also very good) lookout bombed out Michaeliskirche. Its a long hard slog up the 544 stairs to the top (there is no lift and the stairs get a little narrow at the peak) but for that you get a stunning and dramatic view over the Rathausmarkt and the Alster lake. If you can, time the visit during winter, where the short days will give you a night time view of the Rathaus.

There's much more to the church than the chapel.
If physical strength is not an issue, it's worth a trip up.
You pay 3 Euro, sign in with your name and number of party before you enter. Upon completion, you the check off your name on the list. I suppose that is a safety feature in case you don't come down, they will send a rescue team.
It has several platform in between so you are able to catch your breath and take in the view every so often. I went during a snow storm and was discouraged to climb up because the view was not supposed to be very clear. But I lucked out. It was very clear and the city covered with snow was magnificent. There is no way you can cover this much ground on foot in one day. it's a perfect solution to a short visit.

Hauptkirche St. Petri zu Hamburg, or St. Peter's Church, the beautiful and majestic red bricj Gothic church, is the oldest parish church in Hamburg dating back to 1195. It is really worth visiting. The church is located on the main commercial street of the city - Moenckebergstrasse, it is also situated not so far away from the Hamburg City Hall. Although it as destroyed by the Great Fire of the city in May 1842, the church was rebuilt in 1844-1849 on the old site, and the only tower was finished in 1878. The tower is 132 meters high, and you can climb the 544 steps to the top of the tower to its viewpoint at 123m, from which you can watch central Hamburg through a skylight (porthole). The bronze lion-head door handles, dating from the foundation of the original tower in 1342, are the oldest work of art in Hamburg. It is a wonderful place of peace and quiet and we love to visit the church to relax away from the noise of the street and the crowds of people in the nearby Europa Passage. There are also public toilets inside the church. We can strongly recommend the place, the church is really worth visiting.

This eas my second time in the city and first to visit St Peter’s Church. It was easy to find, welcoming, and could be covered in a reasonable amount of time. Interesting architecture, art, snd furnishings and offered a nice change of pace from museums.

There are many churches in Hamburg, some destroyed in the war, as was the original one here, and the previous one in the great fire of 1842.
The cathedral contains many pieces of art, and probably the best known are the lion-head door handles, located in the left wing of the west portal, and were saved from the fire. From the 17th century, there are two oil paintings by Gottfried Libalt, Jacob's Dream and Christ's Birth.
Most of the interior is quite plain and simple. You can pay a small fee to climb the spire.

I would highly recommend a visit to this Protestant church, very simple interior as you would expect but impressive nonetheless. The highlight though was the climb to the top of the tower - not for the faint hearted as a real climb particularly where the steps are on spiral staircases at the beginning and end. However lots to keep you informed and entertained on the way up. The portals allow great views of Hamburg. Highly recommended.

The church itself is a beautiful and peaceful place. Unlike other churches in the area it is free to get in to and look around.
Most people come here for the climb to the top of the tower - for 3 euros pp. It is well worthwhile despite the very steep climb up the 530-odd steps to the top. Views are spectacular and I'd recommend it to all who can get up and back down again!
