A great walk through key styles and periods in art history, all laid out well and with everything in English as well as German so very helpful. There were several different extra exhibitions that were good too....lots of modern art installations that I find baffling but maybe that's just me! A decent cafe but very limited menu. All in all... This is a beautiful gallery with a wide range of art, we enjoyed wandering round and talking about the different paintings with the kids. The boys enjoyed copying the poses in different paintings and guessing at the meanings of modern art.

Before going to Hamburg I didn't really know this museum but I knew they had a favorite painting: The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Casper Friedrich. Seeing this painting in person made the trip to Hamburg memorable. They do rotate pieces from their vast collection so a few of the other paintings I wanted to see were not... More

One of the best art museums in Germany is the Hamburg Arthall. Spread over three big buildings is takes you through everything from the old masters to modern and contemporary art. Prepare to spend at least two hours here which will just be a quick walkthrough, you can easily spend a day and they have excellent cafés and a good... More

Having visited some other major galleries in Europe, I had high hopes for Hamburg Kunsthalle. The gallery was enjoyable and parts of the building it is in are beautiful. For the price though, I don't think there's all that much on offer. You could easily get through this gallery in an hour. The art work was great, but would be... More

The museum has a great collection, particularly of the old masters and an exhaustive collection of romantic artists.

I spent approx. 4 hours in the "Old Masters" section. If you like classical art paintings, this is a real treat. The museum also had a coat room to rid your jacket, and lockers to store your stuff so that you do not have to lug anything around. This museum was the highlight of Hamburg for my trip. The rest... Easy to find, close to the Hauptbahnhof and subway, reasonable entry fee. Enormous collection of old masters and you're taken through time from medieval art to renaissance, realism, impressionists etc and, being from Holland, a decent collection of Dutch paintings with homage to Rembrandt!
