About
The Wasserkunst Elbinsel Kaltehofe is the open slow sand filtration plant of the former waterworks Kaltehofe. The historical site with a total of 22 filter basins supplied Hamburg from 1893 till 1990 with clean and pathogenfree drinking water. Today the plant is listed as an industrial monument that also spots an impressive biodiversity as nature reconquered the area after the closure of the water works.

Water tech history site and park
Feb 2019
Nice park to spend a sunny afternoon walk or bike around the historic water infrastructure. Enjoyed the little water regulation houses and the birds in the ponds. The palace that houses the museum was closed on monday , but the park was open.
Important memorial monument about the slave labor impossed to hundreds of human beings during WWII by Germany at this water treatment organization . List of prisoners name by name

More interesting than I thought
Aug 2016 • Friends
The history of clean water provision in Hamburg is not something that would drag me away from the city itself, but this museum and cafe were a pleasant surprise. The information was fascinating, although this was a problem.
I am fortunate in that my friend is bilingual, so I can listen to her telling me exactly what is being told under each exhibit. It was a shame that there wasn't a translation to be seen.
A walk around the grounds on a sunny day was exceedingly pleasant.

Kaltehofe excursion for a quiet beautiful afternoon
Sep 2015 • Couples
Been to this place several times already. It is for good sunny weather as well as when it is icecold outside.

Inside of the former waterworks main building is a café/resto, a good museum shop, and on the upper levels seminar rooms for rent/events as well as a good educational exhibition about the time this place was active, 1893-1990, and about its full history, and how the 22 huge bassins where built and used

Then there is a new addition you get to underground: a wonderful fountain museum with lots of exhibits how the amazing large fountains in Hamburg and in other places were designed and built.
You get there through the lower floor and a tunnel, and from the outside you only see the upper 50% of the block.

The café has an outdoor terrace. Service is random and funny with regards to when what is being brought, where to buy it, inside or outside, and when what. But staff is very nice and always helpful, also caring for handicapped seniors, food is good.
Take a natural water, it is for 0,00€!

There are lots of events organized, bird watching tours, kids programs, family programs, educational programs, all year round.

It is a stunningly beautiful place!
So glad this historical place is still there and well maintained.
