You cannot visit Hamburg without having walked beneath the Elb river through the old Elb Tunnel. When on the other side, go approximately 100 meters towards the water, to a view point with a great view of the city and the river, before heading back. There's elevators in both ends if you are bringing e.g. a bike.

Found tunnel by chance but very interesting. Free to visit and worth an hour to experience a 100 years+ feat of engineering

This tunnel was suggested by our free walking tour. It was very cool to walk under the river Elbe. It was a free walk, 21 meters underground, and you have a choice of taking the stairs or elevator. If you desired, take your car across!

Cool tunnel that goes under the river! A nice and quirky thing to do and it'll take up a bit of your time when you're in Hamburg. We got off the tourist bus there and took the trip under. There wasn't much on the other side but you get good views of the city so don't forget your camera.

Take the stairs or the lift and explore this wonderful feat of engineering-which is still operational. It's actually used by pedestrians and cars and is quite long & exciting to pass through and hear the echoes.

We got to the tunnel by mistake and was the best part of our night walk. It was built more than 100 years ago and cars are not allowed anymore. Take the stairs when you go down to better feel the history. Visiting is free of charge.

Albert elb tunnel is one of the oldest under river tunnel , a scientific historical marvel that Hamburg is proud of. There is a lift to go down or you can go via stairs. A must see.

You have to go and walk the tunnel when in Hamburg - such a brilliant construction. Well worth doing it. It must be even nicer in summer when you can get a beer at the other side and enjoy it in the sun. (It had to be gluehwein for this time of the year)
