- Christian ETexas Gulf Coast, Texas6 contributionsThe Heart of Munich...Art HistoryFabulous presentation of art. Many of the old masters I studied at OSU in Oklahoma, are displayed here. Seeing these originals signed and protected, was an amazing experience. Fully staffed for security and most speak several languages As I heard at least 5 different languages as patrons asked questions about certain items or paintings. And they have a great souvenir shop, get something to take home...please.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 September 2023

We started on the top floor with the masters and moved to the basement with the modern art superstars. The museum is clean and orderly and we were able to move about freely even though it was a busy day.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023

Cost is 18 Euros and no reductions for seniors but Tuesday is a reduced entry day. The very best artist are on display going back for 500 years. If you only have a passing interest in art then this is the place to get an education. Well worth a 3 hour visit on a winter's day. Audio guides are available for the seriously minded. Lockers cost 1 Euro to deposit your belongings. Quality cafe on site to enable a break.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 December 2023

- Marina CMainz, Germany21 contributionsMagical day ended with rude customer service at the souvenir shopMagical day ended with rude customer service at the souvenir shop: After a private group tour, lunch at the museum restaurant, and solo wandering, I was so excited about some of the art that I decided to buy some souvenirs at the museum shop. I was buying 9 paper items (not postcards) on a very rainy day. I inquired if the shop has plastic bags and, when I saw the bags had the museum name, I briefly considered giving my friends the items in these bags as well. One of the shop clerks was suspicious and unfriendly from the start, questioning me rather unpleasantly and, in the end, pushing/throwing 3 bags, that I paid a euro per bag for, toward me, displeased and annoyed, ignoring my warm „Danke“. Germany is doing an amazing job of valuing art, yet it cannot stop its rude customer service problem. I am writing in hope that the museum administration might read and care to provide a more pleasant customer experience. Thanks for your visit and your feedback! The behaviour of the shop assistant is not in line with our code of conduct for staff and we apologise for this incident. As we value courteous and helpful behaviour from our staff, you are welcome to report the incident to "besucherdienst(a)staedelmuseum.de" so that we can take direct action.Written 25 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 April 2024

We spent a couple of hours just wandering and enjoying all the art. Be sure and walk up to the rooftop for a glorious view of the city. - gemsfinderSingapore, Singapore124 contributionsInterestingThe museum is an interesting place with many exhibits that gives an abridge history of Germany. Do take the time to read the description of the pictures. I learned a lot of history from these paintings. You should allocate almost an entire day in the museum because it's a lot to see and read. Well worth a visit whether you're an arts fan or not.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024

- dcjer2015Washington DC, District of Columbia58 contributionsWorld class museumSuper-impressive museum, recognized as the most important in Frankfurt but underrated on the world stage. The top floor, filled with Old Masters, has knockout after knockout including first rate paintings by Botticelli, Holbein, and Van Eyck. We were dazzled even before we got to the Vermeer. The modern collection includes a very strong and plentiful selection of Kirchner and Beckman, a varied collection of others including stand-outs by Lieberman and Klee, and a smattering of solid works by some even bigger names. The special exhibit focused on female artists certainly made one realize that they should be better-represented in the main collection here and elsewhere. Perhaps best of all we encountered none of the crowds now commonplace elsewhere in Europe. Not only worth a visit but worth coming to Frankfurt for. One (minor) word of caution is the temperature was erratic throughout the museum and very hot on the top floor so layers are good.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024
- Lucy Yuriko PBlumenau, SC76 contributionsGreat Museum with a city view from aboveIf you like museuns, this is one you should visit while in Frankfurt. There is always great exibitions and th building itself worth it. The visit can be auto-guided in many languages or you can just walk and please yourself. There is a café inside and a rooftop with great views of the city. Almost forget to say about the garden outside with beautiful trees and benchs where you can sit and rest.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 July 2024

The museum has a wonderful collection of Old Masters on the top floor. Start there. After you see the giant Rembrandt, the intimate Vermeer and the marvelous Botticelli portrait, go down a flight to see the 19th and 20th century collection where you will find masterpieces by early modern favorite artists. The collection is solid and interesting, and you won't feel like you have museum legs when you are done. You must check your bag in a locker--bring a 1 or 2 euro coin which will be returned to you when you leave.

Always a pleasure to visit. This time the Van Gogh exhibition. A great compilation of artworks extremely well curated with a lot of history around the artist and the support he received in Germany. Incredible amounts of people tho. If you happen to be a sponsor of the museum and have a pass, you can skip all lines...

If I could, I would rate this museum 3.5. The museum features Contemporary Art, Modern Art and Old Master Paintings. I really enjoyed the exhibit by Andreas Muhe, that featured some very interesting pieces with Angela Merkel, and some art from a series he did on the Chernobyl disaster. The Old Master's Painting exhibits were not air conditioned on the day we visited. The areas featuring the Contemporary and Modern Art were both air conditioned. I didn't feel the museum was worth it for 10 Euro admission price. AND this was advertised as a 'Special Price'. The museum Store is nice. The cafe is quite expensive.

Went to the see the Van Gogh exhibit- luckily we got there early. Even still it was very crowded since the exhibit was down in the basement and the rooms were tight for the all the visitors. Almost left without checking out the rest of the art due to some claustrophobia but the upper galleries have more room to breathe. Found some good art but not as much as some other museums. Lockers for your stuff. Reasonable price to enter. Overall worth the visit.

Buy your tickets online. If not you will have to wait for a possible opening that requires 10 others without a ticket.
Once we were in, it was a great time. We focused on Rembrandt exhibit. The audio guides were a great help in explaining the story behind the artist, paintings, his students and his teacher.

Fortunately I had booked tickets on line, the queue was round the block. Very busy but thoroughly enjoyable. I would have gone back but the the line for tickets was too great. I am sure whatever you go to see it will be worthwhile. Rather a bizarre shop with cafe so when busy with the exhibition it gets incredibly confusing. Worth a trip for the exhibition though

This is a private collection with many gems. I don't think I've been to a museum that had as so many Symbolist paintings. I assume there are so many because they were contemporaneous with the collector's (Stadel) acquisitions. There are also many Northern and Italian Renaissance works. The two Botticellis are exemplary. If these don't interest you, there are many Medieval, and 19th-21st century works, including photographs.
The museum is located on a "museum row" along the riverbank, so you can make a day of it.

All shops were closed in Germany this Saturday so we had to find something to go. The Stadel Museum was a great choice. A good introduction to European and German art from the fifteen century till now. Please ensure you go to the basement for the modern art exhibition and enjoy the nice surroundings and not just the art.

I enjoyed a couple hours here one rainy afternoon, very pleasant, some lovey art pieces. I especially liked the old masters but also contemporary and graphics. A nice mix of art to see. Very nice building not too overwhelming.

There is a lift for wheelchair access to the east side of the building in Durerstrasse. Most of the building is fairly accessible for wheelchairs by means of lifts. You may find the cafe and shop area not the most spacious for navigating wheelchairs but it’s reasonable

We have an overnight layover in Frankfurt in early November 2019 arriving mid day and departing late morning the next day. Would like to see some of Frankfurt. Should we stay downtown or at airport? We like to walk so what should we see and where is an excellent restaurant?

You should definitely stay in downtown Frankfurt. I stayed at the Westin Hotel. Close to historic sites. Check out Rick Steves book in Frankfurt and lonely Planet.
Have fun.

Hi, we plan to visit the museum on March 22 - both the Rubens exhibition and the permanent collection. Do we need to buy on-line tickets in advance, or is it sufficient to buy the tickets when arriving at the museum? Thanks!

Hi Debby,
I spent 1 day in Frankfurt and here are my recommendations:
* Get a two-day Frankfurt card for 15.50 euros and it covers all public transportations, including the train ride from the airport :)
Must-see:
1) Romer plaza
2) Staedel museum
3) the shore by the river (good sunset view)
4) the observation desk on top of the old church by Romer
Food:
Giant food market walking distance to Romer (check TripAdvisor). It has everything you need to sample, from German sausage to cheese to wine and all!
