Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Altstadt is the old part of Hannover from the renaissance days of Germany. Most of it was destroyed from Allied bombers during the Second World War. But, the parts of Altstadt that remain are a must stop for any tourists to take the time and walk through this historic area. The buildings that remain are in good condition are really fascinating to walk into if you have the chance to check any of them out. There are many cafés, bars, and restaurants throughout this area to check out.

It must have taken lots of pain and engineering to move those houses left undamaged by the bombings, in order to re-create the old town feel, right where it used to be. The result is spectacular and if you didn't know how things happened, you could never tell.

Altstadt is a metaphor. The old half-timbered city of Hanover was lost irretrievably during the Second world war. The allies bombed Hanover systematically and achieved an outstanding (in military sense) result: only 40 houses were not destroyed or partially destroyed. Only 12 of them were in the area Kremerstrasse and Burgstraße underground station. The remaining half-timbered demolished in the late 50s and built again. Leibniz house (or rather its layout), for example, is even in another place. The market Church (Marktkirche) has only the walls real. It turned out nice, but not authentic.

From the information centre opposite the Hauptbahnhof buy the pocket book The Red Thread, your peronal floorline city guide. Follow the red line on the footpath and see all the fantastic historical sights in Hannover. Can be done in an afternoon.

I frightful to learn that 90% of the medieval city was destroyed in the bomb raids, at the end of WW2. Justified as it may have been deemed at the time, the realization is staggering. And the will of local people to rebuild and keep on is trully remarkable. The result is a beautiful city, with a lot to offer. Quiet and refrained, open to the visitors but not overjoyed, same as most German cities. However, for tourists passing through, it is a worthy stop, a magic view for thirsty eyes and a sad history lesson for those yound enough to question the realities of past wars.

Altstadt is the Old Town in every German town. Usually it is a very picturesque and charming place with historical houses (many of them half timbered), nice restaurants and bars and historic Churches as well. That's also the case here in Hannover.
Everything is neat and clean, and don't forget one thing - it was all demolished to ground after WWII and rebuilt with great care and taste.

Its a good attempt by the city burgers to create an 'old town' in the middle of Hanover, the fact the whole place was effectively flattened in the second world war - the old city isn't really that old but it has been made to give some assemble of how the city may have been back in the day - its worth a visit

Hannover has a wonderful way of showing the Altstadt. Just follow the Red Line (explanation available in the Tourist Office).
