The core of the cathedral is more than 1200 years old and dates from a time when Charlemagne ruled over an empire that included large parts of what is now Germany and France. Perhaps for this reason there were so many French visitors. The cathedral actually is a kind of conglomerate of different chapels and structures that were added during... More

To start with, I was not very keen on visiting the cathedral. But, I must admit that the dominant view of the cathedral struck me at first sight. Thanks to the Emperor Charle Mahne!

The Dom of Aachen is something impressive. Imagine the center part is built in the 9th century. No machines no help in any way except knowledge and human power. So many stories are told and it's to be advised to do a guided tour.

I usually do not visit any cathedral because all of them seem similar to me but this was different. It is very beautiful, I love the stained glass and decorated ceilings. I do not give 5 points because a man approached me and made me pay 1€ for taking pictures.

What splendor and beauty an emperor like Charles the Great could bring to a city on the great roman routes to the west... a Dom/Cathedral was built - from the outside a great church from the insight almost a palace for the emperor. The original wooden throne still to be seen! Marvelous sculptures and sarcophagus can be admired. Enjoy!

After being initially a bit disappointed by the exterior we went inside and wow what a magnificent place. A Byzantine style masterpiece with gold everywhere. It isn't the biggest and can get a bit cramped but it's an absolute must visit location. The treasury building around the corner is well worth a visit as well.

The Aachen Cathedral is deservingly the very first site in the entire Germany to be given the UNESCO World Heritage site status. We visited it during christmas, when the whole Aachen is in a celebration mood. The cherry on the top was this Aachen cathedral! Mesmerizing interior!

We've visited this World Heritage site several times. It is always worth dropping in to sit in awe of the amazing dom inside, the gilded altar area (which now can only be accessed with special arrangements) and the entire architectural marvels. Simply amazing

A beautiful Dom (Cathedral) in Aachen, Germany that was ordered by the Emperor Charlemagne, who is buried there. It was the site of the coronation of 30 German Kings and 12 German Queens. It is beautifully maintained, and an excellent example of the architecture of the times. It is well worth the time to visit.
