Another cool tower.

Built in 1220 the Bayenturm is what in its heyday one of 12 towers that formed part of the defensive fortifications around this city on the River Rhine.
It's a beautiful evocative tower ,makes for some great photographic opportunities, severely damaged during world war two it was rebuilt during the 1980's it's now part of the rejuvenated dock and harbour area which is always a joy to visit especially if your heading to the Harbour Christmas Market which I love spending hours in.
A wonderful evocative building, a beautiful tower and most definitely well worth checking out and easy to locate along Am Bayenturm.

Enjoyed seeing these towers...
May 2019 • Friends
We enjoyed seeing several of these towers that all formed part of the medieval walls - built in the 13th century. Think there are 12 in total and we happened to be passing by and stopped at 3 of them. Right next to the River Rhine too. Good stuff.

Tall medieval tower
Aug 2017 • Solo
Part of the medieval fortifications of the city dating back to the thirteenth century, the tower stood at the southern end of the city walls and is very well preserved. The crenelated tower has a square base with angled corners on the upper floors and is located near the Rhine. Remains of the thick city walls can also be seen linked to the tower.

Another stunning tower.

We came across this beautiful tower as we were bimbling around this part of Cologne,it's an evocative looking tower and is one of Colognes oldest towers being built in the 13th century.
This is the tallest tower remaining from the old defensive walls and despite severe damage during WW2 was rebuilt post war to its former glory.
Bayenturm is easy to locate on Am Bayenturm and is most definitely well worth checking out.

Picturesque tower
May 2016 • Friends
While visiting the new area of Cologne called Rheinau Harbour (“Rheinauhafen“ in German) we saw the picturesque “Bayenturm“, resting on a massive square base. It was built around 1220 as southern corner tower of the now disappeared medieval city walls. The storming of the tower, major stronghold of archbishop Engelbert of Falkenburg, by the burgers of Cologne in 1262 put an end to his ruling. Indeed, the saying went: “Who has the tower, has the power”.

The Bayenturm was heavily damaged during World War II and fell into ruins. It was rebuilt as late as 1987. The interior cannot be visit. Since 1994 the tower houses archives and a documentation centre on feminism. Hence the name “FrauenMediaturm” on a sign at the foot of the tower. Recently the heavily-subsidised foundation managing the tower has come under attack because the returns for the public are thought to be minimal.

THE TALLEST TOWER OF THEM ALL
Mar 2016 • Solo
The Bayenturm is the tallest tower left from Colognes medieval past and stands very proud alongside it's archway. Worth viewing!
