Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The old market back in the day, but is now a touristy place to visit. It's basically a public square with a few interesting sights along with the many cafes and restaurants around the square. Good things to look out for when visiting the square are the Jan von Werth Fountain in the centre of the square, the hard to miss Town Hall that dominates the western side of the square and the toilet humour Kallendresser.

Great market near the shops. Selling unusual arts and crafts and lovely authentic German food. Don't forget the Gluhwein!

Friday is wedding day and many couples are outside celebrating their unions with friends and family. Romance is in the air.

Part of the old town place - 3 marketplaces altogether, quite close to one another, restaurants and a specific cosy atmosphere!

This is such a nice area to grab a leisurely drink and people watch. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to places to cool your heels.

One of the old historical squares in old Cologne city centre. Similar to the adjacent larger square Heumarkt, this Alter Markt has long history, started as a port at the tributary of Rhine. By the times when this port became silted up and finally the tributary was filled up, the port was gone and became a square with all the surrounding developments until today. Smaller in size this square is surrounded with plenty of nice cafes and restaurants as well as hotels, its position closer to the main attractions of, Cologne City Hall (Rathaus), Cologne Cathedral, and the Central Station makes this place an easy parts of the walking itinerary when strolling in city area. A nice place to stop and admire the statue in the mid, Jan von Werth Fountain, a general during the Thirty Years' War, and take a lunch or dinner stop here.

There are lots of buildings with the typical German architecture you’d expect and many little shops and restaurants. It’s nice to stroll along the river and pop in and out of stores while admiring your surroundings.

As far as European city squares go, this is definitely on the modern end of the spectrum. But there is plenty going on and there are a few older sights to take in, including the City Hall.

I attended the winter market here in December 2015 and it was one of the nicest Christmas events I've ever attended.

The ice-skating rink was built in a circuit, with the statue as a centrepiece and was located right in the middle of the winter market, next to the curling rink and the main bar.

The market itself was like an image from Hansel and Gretel. Each of the little stalls was built with wood and the foods and drinks on sale as the sun set and the cathedral was illuminated in the background just set the perfect Christmas scene.

Highly recommended to anyone at Christmastime to get in the mood for festivities.
