Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I went by the Historic Town Hall in Cologne during an excursion on a Viking Rhine River Cruise this past April. A wedding was being conducted as we walked by the building. It is one of about four outstanding pieces of architecture in Cologne.

After the Cathedral, this beautiful medieval building is the major attraction of Cologne.

It's a working town hall, in fact when I went there was a wedding party outside, and an extension with modern architecture is juxtaposed to the medieval part.

Part of a very pretty square.

The Rathaus Koln is the administrative building of Cologne city and the offices of the Mayor of the city. The building is an eclectic mix of style with extensions clearly having been done over centuries using whatever architectural style was in vogue at the time. The Gothic tower is over 60 metres high and is very impressive looking, dominating the skyline around Rathausplatz and the many architectural sculptures that adorn the tower. The entrance to the city hall with it’s16th century Renaissance style loggia and cloister is beauty of symmetry.

I was glad that this Gothic tower was pointed out on our walking tour. The statues that surround the 5-storey Tower (which had the Council cellar inside ("Ratskeller") had the most amazing sculptures all around it, and we were told some were Roman emperors. The Tower (the most interesting part of the City Hall) was built between 1407 and 1414. It was heavily damaged during the bombing of Cologne in World War II, but it and the exterior stone figures were entirely restored.

Friday is wedding day here with the many brides and wedding parties celebrating their unions outside. A mix of the historic and the modern during a walking tour.

The town hall is historical and is kinda cool to see. But, the really cool part is that many couples get married here, and have their receptions on the street court yard! It was so interesting to see the brides in their gowns sipping champagne and standing around a portable table in front of the town hall! The weddings appear to only happen on Fridays, so try to make your visit on that day.

This is a very nice town hall and when you walk around you see some great features in the design and architecture. The clock is great and the building is a fine example of this historic area of Köln. It’s well, worth a visit and great for some photos.

The front of the old City Hall building was blocked off due to some near by constrction. However, if you walk around to the back, the Alter Markt, you can get a better look at the beautiful tower structure as well as the new city hall building.

The Town Hall I was told is still used to register weddings and looks so grand as well. Current construction ongoing around it impaired the view.

Cologne is a very busy city and we were visiting "off-season" which made for less crowds. So worth walking around the old town though and soaking up the history and architecture!
