We attended the 2023 opera gala. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva joined a half-dozen other great voices in a collection of, at times, breathtakingly beautiful arias. It was the kind of night one doesn't forget. I'm glad I brought a handkerchief. The acoustics brought out a remarkably fine sound from the orchestra and singers. I'm hard pressed to remember another classical music venue that provides such a clean and lively sound.

The opera house in Duesseldorf is on the smallish side, which is all to the good. The sight lines are great even from the side. We saw and heard two one-act operas by Zemlinsky. The direction of the first, A Florentine Tragedy, was problematic, since the director chose to present the opera as a dream by Bianca. In my opinion it worked; my wife was less convinced. The second opera, The Dwarf, began slowly but picked up when the dwarf showed up. Astunning work, well sung by all and especially by Raymond Very in the title role.

We came to Düsseldorf to hear Wagner's RING cycle at the Oper am Rhein. It was absolutely superb - the production and cast were much better than the two RING cycles we had attended in the past 14 years at Bayreuth (although, we do love the Bayreuth Theater and there is no place on earth like it!). The cast was amazing - phenomenal singing in each of the four operas. Fantastic Wotan, Sigmund/Siegfried (they were sung by the same person - the wonderful Siegfried stepped in at the last minute for the indisposed Sigmund and did an incredible job – he had no rehearsal and had not seen this production - a real pro!), Mime, Albrecht and the extraordinary Brunnhilde (the USA dramatic soprano, Linda Watson, who had the audience on their feet at every performance when she sang). The conductor, Axel Kober, was outstanding – he had complete command of every note of all four operas! The house was comfortable and very good acoustically - we look forward to returning there next year!

My husband and I attended the ballet Giselle. Horror. I don't recommend it to anyone, unless you like super modern ballet.
Firstly, it was not written anywhere that this is a modern interpretation of the classic Giselle. Everything was mixed in here - lesbian love and men dancing in women's tutus, at some point an old fat woman came on stage. The story was distorted beyond recognition and the audience was completely unclear what was happening on stage. We tried to enjoy the music, the orchestra played excellently and the dance technique was good, the performance was not bad, although Russian ballet is still better.

Opera fans will not find the opera house in Dusseldorf lacking and may be surprised but the top quality company and programme in the "country". Prices are attractive and tickets are available for "everyone".
A wonderful find for Opera fans around the world !

Although the exterior of this opera house is not grand, the interior is excellent- every seat has an excellent view and the acoustics are terrific. Ticket prices are very reasonable and I would highly recommend the company- an even an good standard in every production I saw there

Great performances for reasonable price; do not compare it with the Vienese Staatsoper or the Royal Operahouse of Covent Garden; do do expect very nice performances in a cosy theater in 50's architecture. Well worth a visit.

The opera house has got a very good staff. International and outstanding singers. Last time we saw Mozart: Zauberflöte, by Barrie Kosky. This was the best ever performance of thsi opera what we saw. But other performances were also very good.

If you have been to Vienna, Berlin or Munich, the Duesseldorf Opera (Deutsche Oper am Rhein) will feel a bit spartan. As far as performances are concerned - and I think that's true for any opera house today - check whether you like the stage setting. Performances do vary between tradiional and very modern settings and that's not to everybody's taste. I have seen the most delightful performances - and I have been bitterly disappointed in modern stage settings (I have had that experience in many oher opera houses).
The cost for a ticket in Duesseldorf is moderate (compared to other stages), you can collect the ticket on the day of the performance. There are car parks close by; the Altstadt with its huge variety of restaurants is no far away. If you select the right perfromance for you, you'll have an enjoyable evening.

It was the opera that brought us to Dusseldorf - with careful picking of dates we managed to see 5 operas in 7 nights. And there's the problem with reviewing this as an attraction - it really depends on the opera you see, your expectations, and the performance on the night.
La Traviata was performed on a blank stage with average performances.
L'Elisir d'Amore was a delight - nicely staged, nicely sung, and with an appropriate amount of jollity.
Carmen was disappointing - it seemed to lack the passion and seductiveness the opera needs from the lead.
The magic flute was just weird - I don't understand the popularity of this opera (of the 5 performances we went to, only this one was sold out) - wherever we go it's on and, whilst I always walk out saying "never again", the next time we're on an opera trip there it is again, so I get a couple of cheap seats and walk out again saying "never again".
Der fliegende Holländer was, without doubt and by a very long way, the highlight - performed, as Wagner intended, without intermission and I don't recall breathing during the 2 1/2 hours it was on - spectacular scenery, and amazing performances with not a single "weak" link - the electricity between the Dutchman and Senta when first they met was almost visible - the only tiny thing missing was, as seems usual these days, the final ascent of the couple to heaven, but I like to think the 2 orange lights separated by a white streak going upwards was implying that. Had it been on the next night I'd have gone again in an instant.
You can pay a lot more elsewhere and see performances worse than these, and better - but this is not so expensive that it isn't worth the risk.
