I went here as a relative suggested I check out a photo exhibition that was on there whilst I was in town for a day. It's five euro for entry and that includes all the exhibits. Bag and coat storage is free. The photo exhibition was good but what really was impressive was the art collection. It was insanely well... More

Had a few hours to kill in the morning,so went to this museum. Beautifully laid out, excellent ,well trained staff. The collection is stunning, all the big names. We were so pleased to have visited this. Excellent and well worth the visit if your in this area. You would be sad if you missed it.

This museum has a GREAT permanent collection from the impressionists onwards, it's set out in light airy galleries, there were few other visitors to distract me when I visited mid-afternoon, mid week - and it's FREE (not for special exhibitions). Unless you're pushed for time in Essen, it would be a crime not to visit.

One of favorite places to have seen in Essen! Take a look at their Homepage for more information about actual exhibitions. Great Museum with nice and very kind support.

I've just completed a mini-tour of Rhine-Westphalia with the sole aim of seeing as much German Expressionist painting as I could (I know). I visited the Ludwig and Wallraf-Richartz in Cologne and the K20 in Dusseldorf; this museum was by far the most enjoyable. The building is all on one floor and it open, light and spacious. I went on... More

This museum is very unassuming from the outside but it is unmistakably a pretty fancy art gallery/installation. First of all it is free for permanent exhibits, but of course, you can pay for the special shows that they are holding at the time. We didn't but I am not a big fan of modern art. However, the good thing about... More

The Museum Folkwang is one of the greatest museums of 20th-century art I have ever been in, and I’ve been in dozens. The building is absolutely perfect for viewing the works on display: beautiful natural lighting and tons of space between individual works. Wonderful. Probably THE best museum space I have experienced. Unbeknownst to me in advance, the Museum Folkwang... More

A wide selection of trans historical art, and from many famous artists. The free entrance reminded me of being back in london, and so did the quality of the collection. If you haven't been, take a day for this, it is worth your while.

The Folkwang is Essen's most credited museum that has undergone a major overhaul and was reopened in 2010. Great exhibitions from different artists and epochs. Also the main exhibition is free. A must-see!

The gallery was an interesting experience, allowing me to see some less known paintings from world's most famous artists. Also the tour through all the currents throughout the years was a good opportunity to revise some knowledge about art.
