Lots of history. Need to learn German fast!

It is a beautiful internal architecture. We are not in Rome or Salvador - Bahia - but has some Very significant history. Nice place to meditate.

The Cathedral is definitely worth a visit when in Mainz. It's an impressive construction on the outside and inside you will find a mix of gothic and romanesque style build that will surely get your attention. The fresques and the chapels are worthy a close look for anyone, equal if you like history or not. As a nice tip for... More

The red sandstone really towers above the city. It was under scaffolding for restoration outside, but the inside was very majestic in size and scope. We wandered around gazing upward at all the many tombs and stone statues. There was also a beautiful fullsize nativity scene carved in wood to the side of one wing with a backdrop of evergreen... You have to visit the Mainzer Dom when in Mainz. Located right in the middle of the city center, it is dominating the Marktplatz. Have a look inside where you find it surprisingly simple. Also have a look into the cloister and the crypt.

Huge and beautiful but it would be nice if they had flyers or things to buy explaining the history of the Dom.

Alongside Worms and Speyer, this is one of the "big three" Rhineland cathedrals. As Simon Winder says in his book "Germania", it is "impossible to wander around Mainz Cathedral without wanting to know more: the sheer drama of the place". Vast and soaring. Yes, a bit dark, dusty and musty inside, and yes, grey stained glass, but sitting in a... More

Due to my many travels to South and Central America I have visited many outstanding cathedrals and religious places. So whenever I'm in Mainz I have to visit the cathedral. In my eyes the most beautiful place you can visit in Mainz. Once inside take your time to checkout all the monuments and paintings. There are lots of them. Go... More

This is worth looking at if you have an hour and are close by. It has some interesting statues. The stained glass windows are mostly gray/dark so the interior is quite dark. Mainz itself is a lovely town, and the Christmas Market is first rate. So if you are in town for the market, drop by the church as well

A wonderful visit during Christmas time! The magic of the building, the might of history, and the charm of the Christmas markets around.... Pity that the museum is closed on Mondays. Otherwise each corner of the cathedral and the cloister breathes history. A must-see!
