An ancient Roman gate in a small German city, can you get anything more quaint than that. Roman and German history abound in this charming city that is a not-to-be-missed stop on any European tour. I went with my daughter and her husband and it was one of my favorites in a multi-country tour.

Porta Nigra is impressive from the outside but go in and climb up to the top and it is even better. The views of the town and surrounding hillsides are nice as is the detailed architecture. It is also a very affordable activity, especially if you buy the family ticket.

It was much larger than I expected - it is amazing to think that this has stood there for so long - watching so much go by and through.

Worth climbing through ... doesn't take very long. Good views of the city. Would not wait in line, however.

As a history enthusiast I have read a lot about the Trier city and had a very high expectations, but what I saw personally while visiting in August simply got me overwhelmed... I have only few words, which probably describe the feelings I have had when I saw this manument for the first time... Magnificent, Powerfull, Spiritual!!! I simply approached... More

Porta Nigra is the remains of the north gate into Trier when it was the Roman outpost supporting the occupation of Gaul and the Germanic tribes. Built around 126 A.D. (date is uncertain due to lack of written details) it was partially dismantled during the middle ages as a standing stone quarry. A monk of questionable sanity saved the remnants;... More

The Porta Nigra City Wall in Trier was one of those monument remains that causes you to stop and think about the past. Was a Kodak moment

What makes the Porta Nigra worth the admission price is two-fold. First, it is interesting to learn the history of the former Roman wall gate and view an example of the outstanding Roman architecture. Second, the best views of Trier and the Hauptmarkt are from the top floor of the Porta Nigra.
