The City Museum Simeonstift in Trier shows art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages to well into the 21th century. The exhibition is founded on a collection of valuable donations made by well-known citizens of the city. The artefacts on display are divided into a variety of sections, including paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts, Coptic textiles, furniture and small Oriental plastic art forms. The focal point of the permanent exhibition revolves around the history of the city of Trier. Regularly changing special exhibitions are dedicated to Trier’s native artists or to topics associated with the city. The collection is housed in the Roman building of the Collegiate of St. Simeon, which originates from the 11th century and is directly adjacent to the Porta Nigra. Also worthy of note is the building itself, which boasts one of the oldest and rarely preserved two-storey cloisters. The admission price includes an audio guide (D/E/F/NL), also available as an audio guided tour for children (D).

To its present location near Porta Nigra roman gate Trier city Museum (then it was called differently) moved in the middle of last century as if on a temporary basis. And at the same time started working on the model named "Trier in the year...More

Whilst a free audio guide is included in the price (€4 for AntiqCard holders), it only translates for a minority of artifacts and art in the museum. Also, the arrangement of objects is somewhat haphazard, with medieval material and then modern interpretations all in one...More

Not a must, but still gives a good overview of ancient Trier. Due to the ongoing Nero exhibition I cant't tell much about what's normally shown.

Excellent museum very close to the Porta Niagra. Excellent Nero exhibition was on while I was there. Very well laid out and definitely worth a visit. I just wish I'd taken the audio guide, which I will next time.

The museum provides a fascinating overview of the history of Trier. Good audio guide in German, English, French, or Dutch. Semi integrated with the Porta Nigra.

We had two hours to kill on a wet afternoon in Trier and chose to visit this museum. In fact it should be on most people's agenda: there are all sorts of interesting historic and artistic exhibits and a cinema with an equally interesting black...More

This was a good little museum. The exhibits were historically interesting, and rather beautiful. It is always a good deal to buy the combination tickets for both the museum and the Porta Nigra. You'll save a little bit of money doing that.
