Sadly, one admittedly historic Roman gate, and one Cathedral do not justify a visit yet another rather bleak, austere and excessively cobbled inner city.

When I arrived here, I was amazed how unique this black gate for me. I could imagine how beautiful it was and still we could see its remains beautiful until now.

Visited the ruin of the above. Nothing special though of course there is historic interest. It is accessible from one end of one of the main shopping thoroughfares.

This old enterance to the city allows you to go back in time. There is a small fee to pay but definitely worth while.

I had look at the Black Gate a few years ago it was very interesting the first Roman building I had seen. I was in Trier last week but I just looked at it and took some photos.

21+ years ago, my husband and I came here when we were dating through the first years. This is a very special place. We were away for 17 years and being back brought lots of good memories. Our boys enjoyed it and glad they still take care of the Porta Nigra. My husband who knows its history shared them to... More

In Secrets of the Porta Nigra visitors tour the interior of the city gate accompanied by an actor portraying a Roman centurion, an architect and a priest. The costumed guide did a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life and provided historical background without overload. He constantly interacted with the audience and his wits were clearly well received by... More
