Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is an interesting example of 13th Century architecture. You can take a moment to appreciate this building as you walk through the Marktplatz. I don't believe you can tour the building, but there is a coffee shop on the first floor with outdoor seating, if you would like to make a brief stop here.

Well, the front door is here on the 2nd floor. So, you could go upstairs with a staircase that came down from the front door. But this is very high!
Never seen.
Now there is a coffee house, with the front door downstairs.

Originally the House was called "Zum Säulchen" (the pillars) and was built in 1230 when Trier's medieval city wall was not yet finished. Each house had to defend itself and the entrance was the ‘window’ on the right, accessible only by ladder or wooden staircase that could be pulled up (Trier still has six such Romanesque residential towers ( with the Frankenturm from around 1100 being the oldest). The color scheme of the house is the recreation of considerable original remains.

Heading along the Simeonstrasse, we notice on the left (No. 19) the rather garishly renovated yet still graceful 13th century Dreikonigenhaus - House of the Three Kings. In the old days the front door of the Roman residence was on the second story, reached by a staircase that could be removed in case of danger.

As we walked to the Hauptmarkt from Porta Nigra, our guide pointed out this rowhouse to us which is located at St. Simeonstr and Moselstr, about 2 minutes from Porta Nigra. Look to your left and up. The feature to look for on the outside of this white house is the unusual location of the front door. It's at about the same level as the first row of windows so not at ground level where one would expect a door to be. At first glance, the door seems to be cleverly disguised as another window as it has a similar arch surrounding it just like the windows. A ladder or retractable stairs would have been necessary to enter the house as the door was one floor above ground level. This placement meant that the owners were taking their own precautions against attackers looking for valuables. Tourists see neither a ladder or stairs on the exterior of this house. The more recognizable feature of this white house is its vividly contrasting color scheme of red and mustard yellow brick and patterned tile work that surrounds 2 rows of arched windows. This decorative feature gives the house a Moorish look.
Today, the house has a ground level door and large glass windows at street level. The house is a coffee shop, Good Fellows, with patio seating - another way to know where Dreikonigenhaus is. Seen from the pedestrianized street, the patio table umbrellas hide the marker or sign with the name "Drei Konigenhaus erbuat 1230" that appears on the side of the house along with a clear plastic sign that explains, in German, its historical significance.
We stopped for a quick photo of the exterior of this house with its unusual door placement. Dreikonigenhaus was an interesting sidelight on the way to the Hauptmarkt.

The house has a funny way for entrance to protect it in medieval times. It is located almost after one leaves Porta Nigra, but one must pay close attention as it can be missed easily. I had to return back and search for it before going on.

This house is located on the main pedestrian street very close to Porta Nigra. It has an entrance almost 5 meters higher than the street level and is accessible by a ladder that can be pulled up when not in use; this method was at those times used to defend the house against strangers.

A Romanesque and Gothic patrician house from 1230, this house is on the street from the Market square to the Porta Nigra you would inevitably pass it. So do stop and enjoy the fun aspect of the entrance that was only accessible via a ladder. Today this is one of three remaining such houses in Trier but I could not establish where the others are.

This unique house has its entry accessible ONLY via a rope ladder. This kept out anyone they chose not to see, do business with or protect themselves against.

It took us about 10 minutes to find it ( we had the wrong address) but once you know what you are looking for , it is easy to find . It is a XIII th century building whose main purpose was to defend the city and should had been very hard to access . This is why the door was on the second floor and required a ladder to open it ! . The building was restored to have the same look it had when it was built !
