Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First of all, Saarbrucken is not a must-do city, but the city offers quite a lot, especially around the Sankt Johanner-Markt, with some old buildings and cozy cafes, pubs and restaurants. And if you wander around you will come across more beautiful squares and corners that are worth a visit.
You can also enjoy walking along the river and the city also has a large castle. We were "lucky" that there was a big event and that there was extra entertainment with a boat parade on the Saar and various stages with music.
We had a great time in the city and the city is a good base to visit beautiful places in the area.

The Saarbrücken old town (Altstadt) has a typical German combination of shops and marketplaces, restaurants and outdoor cafes, and historical buildings and fountains. Although it is not as impressive as the Heidelberg Altstadt, for example, it is definitely worth a visit if you are on your way somewhere in Saarbrücken on foot. I chose to have lunch here while walking to the Historical Museum from the train station. Make sure to see the St. Johanner Markt!

We went to the tourism office first thing and they offered us a walking map with historical points of interest in the city. It was super helpful and pointed us to all the right places, particularly in the old town. Visiting Ludwigskirche and the castle walls at Schlossplatz were highlights, and the walk through Alt-Saarbrücken was very charming.

Most places one visits as a tourist have wonderful attractions but one really wouldn't want to "live" there. After a few days in Saarbrucken, I think the opposite is true. There really isn't much to see as the city was mostly destroyed during the war and the "old" buildings are mainly reproductions of the originals. However, there are nice shops and restaurants in a walkable city area and the city appears like it would be a great place to live.

To tell the truth: many times I've past over Saarbrucken to visit 'so called' attractive destinations. Two weeks ago, driving toward Metz, I've decided to give Saarbrucken a 'grace' of an hour...and let me tell that I've spent there almost a whole day.
The town is devided by the Saar river, and the two parts deserve an intensive visit, by feet, of course. St. Johann district includes the St. Johann church, the town hall, various museums and the main shopping streets. On the left bank of the Saar lies the older part of the town, which includes two main popular attractions: the castle with the impressive square and Ludwigskirche, the picturesque baroque church.
Learn a lesson: don't pass over Saarbrucken. You won't regret it.

We intend to stopover without expecting much. But we were pleasantly surprised by the town. It was 1 Jan so everything's closed. But that didn't make us feel anything less of the town. It's compact and easy to walk around and find directions. Plenty of well reviewed restaurants. Shopping. You name it.

Parking was easy and at a good prive. We walked the entire centre, incl. open air market, department store and the commercial centre. Across the old bridge towards the schloss, the old administration buildings and the church. Then back to the city hall square. Much nicer town than expected.

It is located by Saar river. It has a large selection of restaurants and shops. You can sit comfortably over there for many hours.
On Saturday, it has a farmers market with a local farmers.
Sunday, all shops are closed.

I went to the downtown with my husband and my 5 months old babe.
The place is very nice for walk, to have a coffee or ice cream. There is also a plenty of nice restaurants. They have a lot of influence of French cousine .
The weather was very nice, there is a lot of shops in the street, and the buildings are very traditional from Germany. The city is very clean, ordered, and beautiful. Very relax to go with family to enjoy the afternoon. Definitely worth to go!
