Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Standing in this almost empty Theaterplatz in mid-morning, I imagined it filled with horse-drawn carriages and couples arriving for an evening performance two hundred years ago. Surrounded by so much stonework and lovely architecture, it's like a step back in time. We learned on a half day walking tour that the darkened color of the old buildings is not due to their age or WWII bombing... No, the limestone used to build naturally turns dark and erodes. It is a never-ending battle to replace architectural details that are in danger of coming loose or collapsing. We did attend the Dresdent Opera one evening, quite a beautiful experience!

The Theaterplatz is a public square where you can see three of the major landmarks of Dresden, the Semperoper opera house of Dresden, the Zwinger palace complex and Katholische Hofkirche. There’s not much in the way of restaurants and cafes around the square.

stay away from this extra right wing nest of Nazis. Pegida's home town. Not a pleasant nor safe place to be right now. What a shame because this used to be my favorite romantic town in Germany. Destroyed by war, rebuilt after reunification and probably set for destruction again... Did history teach these fascists nothing?

This building was very impressive in its architecture OUTSIDE and INSIDE.

It was a SMALL theater but ELEGANT.

We booked a BALLET while in DRESDEN. It was nice to dress up and attend the BALLET.

The building is directly across the street from the Hotel
Teschenbergpalais Kempinski. Was not afraid to walk back to hotel after ballet. Many others doing the same.

Using this platz in front of the Semper Opera House is a good place for the start of an exploratory walk through Old Town. Perched in the middle of the platz is an equestrian statue of King John, an early Saxon ruler. As you turn to the left is the exceptional Zwinger complex and its museums. Further left is the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. You can continue from there toward the Neumarkt and encounter a number of other historical sights including the Frauenkirche.

Every direction you turn you see astounding architectural beauty. The Theatre is of course the highlight - Originally built in 1841, this hall was rebuilt by the original architect after a fire in 1869 and again renovated following the war damage. Nevertheless, the opera building, is regarded as one of the most beautiful European opera houses.
Opposite of course is the equally impressive Katholische Hofkirche, the City Cathedral with its wonderful gothic architecture and spire.
If you visit Dresden then you simply must go here!!!

I really did not have a chance to go inside but from the outside it looks very charming. You can take photos from all angles. It is in the centre of historic areas.

They like large squares in Dresden. This one seems particularly big. It’s by the river and many tourist sites border it. Empty, too. One big empty. No seating, trees, statues, fountains that I can remember. And the side by the river has no grand building, only one pretty small one with a minor amount of personality. The square feels windswept and desolate. Personally, I don’t mind that. I like that feeling. Whether you do is another story.

This square is bordered by three of Dresden's top tourist venues---the Zwinger, the Hofkirche and th Semperoper. There is a large bronze monument in its center and often there are musicians playing. The day we were there a wonderful pianist was playing classical music and show tunes. Clearly this area should be a stop on anyone's tourist agenda.

Theaterplatz is one of the most iconic squares in Dresden. Great architecture around and you definitely have to be there during your visit to Dresden.
