About
Dresdner Striezelmarkt was founded in 1434, making it one of Germany's oldest Christmas Markets. The name (Striezel) derives from a local fruit cake that was traditionally sold at the market, and is now better known as Stollen. The market takes pride in its giant candle pyramid, which stands at 14 metres tall, making it the world's tallest. The candles power blades above, causing the festive ornaments on the pyramid to turn. Other Dresden traditions include wooden Smoking Men that breathe out incense, and carved wooden Tchaikovsky-style Nutcracker Soldiers. You can also try the local Christmas food and drink by way of prune figurines, gingerbread and mulled wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon. The famous Christmas arch displays candles and figures depicting the city's mining traditions and folklore.

Wow, just wow. Best Christmas Market we have ever been to. Cheaper than UK markets and the stall decorations were amazing. Arrived for a day trip from Prague. The train was clean and we even had our own compartment on the journey there. Just over two hours journey. From the station we walked through a minor market which would have been a large market in many cities. The main market in Altmarkt was fairly busy, but not so much that you couldnt get access to anywhere. The Altmarkt Galerie off the square, is a huge shopping centre. A third Christmas market is located in the Neumarkt, not too far away. Our only gripe was the apparant lack of pubs between the station and the markets. We assumed this being Germany, pub culture would have been right up there, but not in the city centre, at least from what we saw. This was our first trip to Dresden and we might have been a bit blinkered to have noticed any traditional pubs. We did find an Irish bar and the Guinness was better than average. Would definately recomend Dresden Christmas. We werent there long enough to explore the history or rest of the city, but we would definately go back.

If you are looking to experience nice and joyous Christmas atmosphere looks elsewhere or dont come during the weekend. While the market is all decked out in Christmas spirit you cannot even make one step in any direction. All the stalls are either impossible to get to or have long line. We really wanted to get a Christmas stolle and were waiting for 20min in line and another 20 trying to get out of there, dodging people with hot chocolate or mulled wine in their full open cups. Anxiety inducing experience

A total disaster, I was there with my grandchildren at the weekend and would never do it again. You can't look anywhere without being bumped into, even when you're standing people step over your pram, it's just catastrophic. There's no Christmas spirit when you're there and the journey by car is terrible, the whole of Dresden is full of traffic jams. I absolutely cannot recommend the Christmas market to families and I wouldn't go there myself either. It's a shame, we were really looking forward to it.

I would never go there again at the weekend, it was a disaster just getting there by car was a challenge. Dresden was completely closed. You can't stop and look at any stand because you're overwhelmed by the crowds and it's definitely not recommended with small children, no one looks after the little ones in any way. So never again to the Christmas market in Dresden....

There are 15 Christmas markets in Dresden and this is the largest. The market is spacious and there is plenty of everything for sale, including various mulled wines and punches to drink, and sausages and sandwiches to eat. In the back right corner they even roast a whole ox. Impressive and delicious.

Such a fab Christmas Market - the best we have been to so far. Highly recommend, we all had a great time. All huts are unique and quality products, prices were also ok, great entertainment with traditional and regional offers. Certainly met our expectations!

Dresden, the oldest Christmas market on record and four markets, each with their own uniqueness.... Food, Traditional, Romantic, Lights.....except they were all the same. About five different stalls and repeat, repeat, repeat. The most boring Christmas markets we have ever been to. Prague is still the best, by far!!
Dresden do do nice stollen though, so brownie points for that!

Due to illness we were forced to cancel our trip in December of 2023. Lovely friends in Dresden visited the Striezelmarkt and purchased the lantern kit for us. Wonderful surprise upon receiving it in the US.

It was great. Although it was quite busy in the evenings, it was easy to stroll through the aisles. We were there during the week, so I can't say what it's like at the weekend. From the large candle arch you have a great overview of the market. The prices were OK. There was something for every budget.
We'll definitely be back.

If you needed to design a Christmas Market use Dresden to copy. Right now I have found four all a little different. The main market has food booths and many of wares to sell. Has a great Farris wheel and a few other Kinder rides around the market. The Booths have decorated roof tops and friendly vendors. Located in a newly repaired square that will take time to maneuver.

Hi, what's the most direct way to travel to Dresden from the UK (South East)? I'm looking into a trip to the Christmas Market in December this year. Thanks for any help

Steve, We flew Dublin to Frankfurt to Dresden, and Munich on the way back. That time of year can be bad weather. Flight delays. Dresden has a nice little airport. Taxi stand outside. Lufthansa both flights. Prices were not that bad, as so many people go to the Christmas Market. Friday night and Saturday night get very very busy. Tough to move around. So plan accordingly. Several markets in the city too.

Hi, I bought a miniature Christmas carousel from a permanent shop in the mall adjacent to the Striezelmarkt in the main square. I am assuming this shop stays open all year round and that you will find your manger scenes there.

Hi,
I am going to Germany Christmas Market in December, and would like to do a 8 day split between Nurembury and Dresden as base. Should I spend 4 days in each place?
How about if I do a 7 day trip, which cities should I allocate an extra day (4 & 3).
Any ideas are definitely helipful. Of course what are the must visit side trips? There are so many of them, I hope I can get help to narrow it down to few from each places. :)
Thank you so much in advance.

I am planning on going to the Dresden Christmas market next month when it opens, but the few times I have gone there in the past I was only at the one in the big square and the smaller ones nearby. Can anyone recommend some other places where the Christmas market is good. I was planning on staying near Dresden Neumarkt. Also any good restaurants which is not too expensive but have English menus? Thank you.
