John - Johann in German - the King of Saxony between 1854 - 1873 , his equestrian statue is place in the Theatreplatz in Dresden. He was a member of the House of Wettin (one of the oldest dynasties in Europe - it can be traced back 1000 years to the early years of the XI-th century - the ancestry of the House of Wettin can be seen on the mural "Procession of Princes", that is decorating the wall of the castle of Dresden.
But enough of the history lesson - the statue of king John was erected in the late 1800's several years after his death.
On the pedestal of the statue there is a interesting bas-relief depicting images from arts and music, industry and trade, etc. - since king John was a promoter for such activities and also what is catching the eye , on the four corners of the pedestal the visitor can see 4 columns (cast in metal not real flames ) with burning flames on top.
In the front bellow his name it can be seen the coat of arms of the House of Wettin.
Overall an interesting spot in Dresden - definitely worth a few minutes of your time and some pictures.

The nineteenth-century equestrian monument dedicated to King John of Saxony is located in the center of the vast Theaterplatz, surrounded by beautiful buildings such as the Zwinger, the Opera House and the Catholic Cathedral. The monument consists of a bronze statue portraying the king on horseback and a square base, decorated with reliefs and at the four corners with elaborate candelabras. One of the many monuments that embellish the elegant historic center of Dresden.

This monument stands in tribute to King John of Saxony. He is mainly noted for unexpectedly inheriting the kingdom, his promotion of industry and being on the losing side of the Austrian-Prussian War. The latter of which lead to Saxony joining the North German Confederation and eventually dissolution of the Kingdom of Saxony.

This monument is an equestrian statue on a socle with bronze reliefs on all sides. The bronze relief frieze depicts of trade and industry showing scenes of mining, metalworking amongst other things. At the four corners of the socle are candle like columns which give the monument a temple like look.

The monument is in Theatreplatz, who's itself a landmark of Dresden. Worth a look if visiting.

King Johann (John in English) could not have picked a much nicer location for a statue as this spot on the Theaterplatz. On his horse he controls the square in from the of the opera building and sits in full view of the beautiful Zwinger palace complex. He was also a patient man, biding his time to become King of Saxony. He was 53 when he finally became king. Together with the other Kingdoms and principalities his Kingdom became part of the German Empire (1871) under the leadership of the King of Prussia. The Dresden district of Johannstadt is named after him.The large equestrian bronze statue, designed by Johannes Schilling, was erected here in 1889.

This statue stands in the middle of Theatreplatz. King John was born in Dresden, and became the king after his brother Frederick Augustus II died. He ruled Saxony for 19 years. This statue of King John on a horse was crafted by Johannes Schilling in 1889, around 16 years after his death. It stands on a rectangular base with bronze relief on it showing scenes which depict transport, trade and agriculture. You can see a locomotive and a paddle steamer here. It is a very elegant statue.

This majestic looking statue of King John (aka Johann) of Saxony is right in the center of this enormous plaza (Theaterplatz)), overlooking many splendid buildings. Many tourists pose at the base of the statue. Good Kodak moment.

One of the interesting monuments to see in Dresden is that of King John of Saxony, whose reign lasted between 1854 to 1873. This statue was created by Johannes Schilling and in the centre of Theatreplatz, in front of the famous Semper Opera House,

This is fairly typical equestrian statue of King John, dressed in robe with sceptre in his right hand. The base of the monument is covered with reliefs and includes by four decorative candle holder sculptures topped with flames. Overall, an interesting monument worth spending a few minutes to view if you enjoy such attractions during your travels.

You can conveniently view the King John of Saxony monument prior to watching a performance at the Semperoper, after visiting the Royal Palace or Zwinger Palace which are both just across the street.

You will not miss this staute for sure if you are around the area for your visit or city walking tour!

At the center of the Theaterplatz in front of the opera house stands this large bronze equestrian statue of King Johann (John), who ruled Saxony between 1854 to 1873 for about 19 years. It was designed by Johannes Schilling and was erected here in 1889.

Our guide gave us a very detailed introduction of this ruler, from his birth to his growing up stages, and ascension to the throne and his passion for literature and the arts besides running his country then!

Well, very magnificent and grand statue and interesting life story!
