- Cheryl YBerlin, Germany13 contributionsDefinitely worth visiting!I love this place! It is a 3-story house with even original wooden staircases from 1845. The ground floor is used more as a show place for works from Mendelssohn with some basic information about his timeline on the corridor wall but generally the ground floor has the most interactive functions in this museum. My favorite room is the Effektorium where you can try to be a conductor on yourself (it is a little pity that I have not found my favorite e-moll op 64), I do not know why I cannot upload a video here but I add a photo of the pink room. The first floor is all about Mendelssohn's life as a composer (even as a painter), his family and his connections during his time. It is really informative but it is really well designed. The plentiful information was organised in a structured way and was shown through different objects/media, so it is not that you read all the time, but try to get the information through different interactions. The second floor is about Fanny Hensel and you wil be partnered with her piano cycle "The Year". BTW there is even a picture room where you can change clothes and take a photo. I payed 8 euros for a student ticket and there are audio guides for other languages if you do not speak German. I don't know why but during my visit it was quite empty so on my side you can go there spontaneouly without making a reservation in advance.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 January 2024

The house is also a good example of the period and the displays are both interesting and stimulating. On Sunday mornings there is chamber concert performed which is an extra bonus to the visit.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 February 2024

I visited this house and only viewed it from the outside due to time constraints. Most reviews are either four or five stars as its obviously a lot better inside than out. You have to pay to enter the building but the garden is free to wander around. Its exterior is very plain and has a plaque on the wall next to the front entrance. In the small garden there is a head sculpture of the man. This is really only worth visiting if you are going inside.

This was a surprise for me, I had personally never heard of Mendelssohn before my daughter suggested this museum. It was an excellent introduction to the composer, his life’s work and accomplishments. Was well arranged in his former residence. Also highlighted his sister who was also very musically talented. They have a really cool interactive exhibit allowing you to conduct a virtual orchestra.

The Mendelssohn Haus is located south of the city centre and not far from the Gewandhaus and the Opera.
The exhibition gives a good insight into the life and work of Mendelssohn, and a special exhibition about the conductor Kurt Masur was also were interesting.

The house is a few blocks east of the Nicolaikirche, making it an easy walk from the Thomaskirche and city center.
A climb up the original staircase takes you to the rooms where the Mendelssohn family lived. His study is reconstructed and decorated accordingly, and many of his watercolor pictures are on display.
On the lower level are some archives, information about the Gewandhaus, and a virtual orchestra room, where you can conduct many of his works, and adjust the tempo and even volume of individual instruments. Fun to play with for beginners and seasoned conductors alike.
A nearby garden and auxiliary museum houses some art and a children's area (likely for school groups), but only the art display was open when I visited. A small cafe has coffee and baked goods available.

This museum was an excellent showcase of Mendelsohn's life. Apart from the usual portraits and stories, the interactive displays added to the experience.
One room provided seats and screens with headphones where you could select and listen to Mendelsohn's extensive music.I was not aware how much he had composed. Another room allowed you to be the 'conductor' of a 'digital' orchestra.
We enjoyed spending a couple of hours there. Audio is included in the entry price.
I would highly recommend visiting this museum.

We actually found the museum dull and boring.
There is not a huge amount to look at and we probably spent about 15 minutes in there.
It was very quiet apart from a couple of Japanese tourists taking pictures of themselves doing the 'conductor' thing. The exhibits weren't really worth the entrance fee.
Personally the Handl Haus in Halle was a lot more enjoyable with loads more to look at.
I'm sure a lot of people will love it but it failed to interest me.

Comprehensive museum consisting of 3 floors. Very informative about the lives of both Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.
Sunday recitals keep up the tradition that the Mendelssohn‘s started. Tickets may be purchased in advance on the website or at the door. Concert is located in a small intimate room with first come seating.
